Auckland Airport (AKL) is New Zealand's largest and busiest airport. It is located about 21 kilometers south of Auckland's city center, near the suburb of Māngere.
The airport is a major hub for both domestic and international travel with regular connections to all other cities in New Zealand and destinations abroad in Australia, Asia, the Pacific region, and the Americas.
Serving over 18 million passengers in 2024, Auckland Airport ranks as the fourth busiest airport in Oceania.

Major Airlines - Air New Zealand, Jetstar, Qantas
Air New Zealand, the national carrier, operates the most flights from Auckland and offers an extensive domestic and international network with regular flights to cities in Australia, Asia, North America, and the Pacific Island Nations. The airline also has seasonal flights to tourist destinations in the region such as Hobart and the Sunshine Coast.
Qantas is the other major airline with lots of flights from and to Auckland Airport. It provides direct flights to Australia and New York JFK.
Jetstar, the low-cost subsidiary of Qantas, serves most of the lower-budget segment with flights to regional destinations.
Of the international full-service airlines, worth noting is Emirates, which operates long-haul flights to Dubai International and beyond.

Check-in Process
You should arrive at least 2 hours before domestic flights and 3 hours before international flights. Auckland Airport can get rather busy at times and it’s better to be early than late!
For checking in and obtaining a boarding card, you have several options:
Online Check-in: Most airlines offer this option through their websites or mobile apps.
Self-Service Kiosks: Located throughout the terminal for quick check-in and boarding pass printing.
Check-in Counters: Staffed by airline representatives for assistance with baggage and other services. International flights to destinations with entry requirements require that you visit a manned counter.
Transit and connecting flights at Auckland Airport
Auckland Airport has reduced facilities after 10 PM. You can stay overnight at the airport, although it’s not designed with that in mind. See the hotels section below for information about accommodation options at or near the airport.
If you are transiting in Auckland to another international flight you need to go to the transit and transfer area. There you will undergo the mandatory security screening. Standard restrictions pertaining to liquids, aerosols, and gels apply here - even those bought duty-free in other airports.
Other than that, transit at Auckland Airport is quite easy - after clearing the security screening, enter the departures area and wait for your next flight.
Security when arriving in Auckland from overseas
Auckland Airport has strict entry procedures, especially when it comes to biosecurity. Protecting New Zealand’s isolated biosphere and fragile ecosystem is of utmost importance and the airport is the first and most important line of defence.
To begin, everyone traveling into New Zealand needs to complete a free New Zealand Traveller Declaration, regardless of nationality or visa status. Be direct and honest about the items you’re bringing on your declaration. It’s better to declare and ask for help than to omit - failure to declare is a severe offense.
Be extra careful with any goods, food, used equipment, hiking shoes, or animal products that may carry pests.
If there are queues on arrival, it’s almost always at the biosecurity screening.
Terminals at Auckland Airport
Auckland Airport has 2 terminals: an International one and a Domestic one. They are connected by a free shuttle bus service, though you can also easily walk between them as they are just 500 meters apart.
International Terminal: Spread over 3 levels, this terminal handles all international flights. It has many duty-free shops, dining options, and other modern amenities. Arriving and departing passengers are physically separated in the airside area.
Domestic Terminal: Handles only domestic flights. It was formerly 2 buildings which have since been connected by a retail area, creating one contiguous terminal for domestic flights.

Dining Options at AKL
Both terminals of Auckland Airport have plenty to offer when it comes to dining and food.
You can choose to eat both before and after the Security screening and options include fast food establishments, sit-down restaurants, cafes, and simple convenience stores.
Some of the over 20 dining options in the International Terminal include:
McDonald's, Pita Pit, and KFC as fast food options before Security.
Relay is your go-to convenience store both before and after Security.

There are 6 bus stops in total, for different types of regional buses, the most important being AT38 which goes to Onehunga Station, and the Airport Link that stops at Puhinui Station and Manukau Bus Station. Both use Bus Stop A.
Taxis and Rideshares: Readily available outside the terminals. The pick-up zone is just a 1-2 minute walk away from the Arrivals area, right outside Door 11. Note that for pre-booked taxis, the meeting point is inside the Arrivals Hall.
Off-site shuttles and rental cars: The pick-up area is at the Off-site Transfer Zone, about 350 meters from Arrivals.
Parking
Auckland Airport offers 3 Waiting Zones and several parking facilities.
The Waiting Zones are ideal for picking up or dropping off passengers, allowing up to 30 minutes of free parking/idling. Which waiting zone to use depends on where you are coming from (north or south) and if you’re going to the International or Domestic terminal. Refer to the signs at the airport for more information.
In terms of short-term parking, go to the newly opened Transport Hub. In there:
P60 on the ground floor is suitable for stays up to 1 hour
P180 on Level 1 is for stays up to 3 hours.
Short stay is drive-up only, not currently bookable online prior to arrival. Access is ticketless, by license plate recognition.
For long-term parking, you have a lot of choices - six different parking lots, both covered and uncovered, are spread around the airport grounds. Entrance is either by license plate recognition or by credit card. The walking time from the parking lots to the terminal buildings is at most 10 minutes, so no need for an extra shuttle. Daily tariffs vary between parking lots, with discounts for longer stays.
