Milan’s second busiest airport is known by 3 names:
Its official name is Il Caravaggio International Airport, named after the great Italian painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio.
Its most used name is Milan Bergamo Airport.
Its location-based name is Orio al Serio International Airport.
Milan-Bergamo's IATA code is BGY and it is situated about 5 kilometers southeast of the town of Bergamo and about 45 kilometers northeast of Milan. Not to be mistaken with the even busier Milan Malpensa (MXP) or the third airport serving the agglomeration - Milan-Linate (LIN).
Milan-Bergamo is an important hub for both domestic and international flights. In 2024, the airport handled over 17 million passengers making it the third-busiest airport in Italy and among the 40 busiest in Europe.
Major Airlines - Ryanair, Wizz Air
Milan Bergamo Airport is a prominent base for low-cost carriers, most notably Ryanair, which operates a substantial number of routes within Europe.
Other low-cost airlines at BGY include Wizz Air, Volotea, Pegasus Airlines, Transavia, and Norwegian Air Shuttle, providing multiple daily flights to cities in Europe and the Middle East.
The Italian airline Neos flies many seasonal flights to holiday destinations in Africa, Spain, and Greece.
Full-service airlines at Bergamo are few but Georgian Airways and Air Albania stand out.

Terminals and Gates of BGY
Bergamo Airport has just one terminal split into 2 gate areas:
Area A: Gates A1 to A15.
Area B: Gates B1 to B5.
In total, there are 26 gates, most of which use bus boarding and only Gates A13 and B5 have jet bridges.
Connecting Flights and Transit at Milan-Bergamo Airport
Given the single terminal, transits, when allowed, are pretty easy to execute.
If you arrive from a destination inside the Schengen zone, do not have additional luggage to check in, and already have your second boarding pass, you just need to follow the “Transit” sign so you won’t have to go through security checks again. Both flights must be on the same day. Even as little as 45 minutes is enough for this kind of transfer.
Those arriving from destinations outside of Schengen must undergo passport control and security screening and then re-enter the airside area once more. Allow at least 90 minutes for transits of this kind.
Wi-Fi at Orio al Serio Airport
Wifi is free at the airport, unlimited in both time and bandwidth. Connection is as simple as selecting “BGY_FREE” from the network list.

Useful Facilities at BGY
Even though not as big as some other European airports, Bergamo still houses many of the facilities that would be useful to the average traveler.
Inside the premises you will find:
Currency exchange
Several banks and ATMs
A pharmacy
First aid cabinet
Lost or left luggage
A chapel
Porter service
Tourist information office
DHL Express office
Dining Options at Il Caravaggio International Airport
There is a variety of dining establishments such as cafes, bars, and restaurants at the airport, both in the airside and landside areas.
Here are some of the passengers’ favorite places to eat and drink at BGY:
Heineken Bar: Under the Autogrill label, this is where you can match any number of beers with sandwiches, appetizers, and cold dishes.
Panella: A bakery specializing in fresh brioche and other pastries.
Berry & Coffee: A small coffee shop with dessert options.
Contadi Castaldi: An exclusive wine bar also serving a vast array of gourmet food and Italian delicacies.
Pizza Flor: A pizza place where tradition and innovation meet.
Coffee you can have from Kimbo, La Marianna, or 12OZ.
Lounges at BGY
There are only 2 VIP lounges at Bergamo Airport, both located in the departures area after the security checks, accessible for a fee or through certain membership programs.
The first is called the Check-in Lounge and features a dedicated check-in desk and a fast track lane, snacks and drinks, and workstations with sockets among other things. The entrance fee is 23,50 EUR if purchased on the spot (a small concession for buying a pass online) for up to 3 hours of stay.
The second is the HelloSky Lounge which offers much the same facilities as the other lounge but in a slightly more elegant and sophisticated setting. Moreover, this lounge includes shower facilities at no extra cost. On-the-spot tickets cost 35 EUR, but buy online and you will pay only 32.
Staying at either lounge allows you to get a discount from a number of shops at the airport.
Transport to and from Bergamo Airport
Bergamo is about 45 km away from Milan though frequent public transport services make connections between the two seamless.
Perhaps the best way to commute is by bus. The Airport Bus 1 runs from the Airport to Citta Alta stopping at the Railway Station and the city center. Services are every 30 minutes between 6 AM and midnight. Tickets cost 2.30 to 5.00 EUR depending on distance or 7.00 EUR for a 3-day pass.
The closest train station to the airport is Bergamo Railway Station. Every 10 minutes, a bus by the ATB company does the 6km between the airport and the railway station. A dedicated train station serving Orio al Serio Airport is planned for 2026.
Those traveling by car need to take the A4 highway which passes right in front of the airport.
As for private transport, which is the only way to get to the city after midnight or before 6 AM when the bus doesn’t run, taxis are always available in front of the terminal. A trip to Milan costs about 100 EUR for a ride of just under an hour.

Parking at Bergamo Airport
Milan Bergamo Airport provides a few different parking facilities for different needs. You can choose to park at:
P1 East Car Park: Closest you can park to the terminal but a bit more expensive than the alternatives. Daily rate of 30 EUR.
P2 Terminal A: A covered parking lot just a stone's throw from Departures. The daily rate is 32 EUR.
P2 Terminal Settore B: Walk 3 minutes more to the terminal to save a bit of money. The daily rate is 25 EUR.
P3 Smart Covered: Located 1.5 km from the terminal, this is the cheapest covered option at 20 EUR/day. A free shuttle connects it to the airport every 20 minutes around the clock.
P3 Smart Uncovered: The cheap uncovered option, also 1.5 km and connected by the same shuttle. Costs 15 EUR/day.
Hotels near Bergamo Airport
The only option to sleep inside the airport is the Zzzleepandgo - pods with privacy that allow you to get some shut-eye directly at the terminal. However, from clunky check-in, through the bare-bones interior, to the lack of adequate noise insulation, this option should be your last resort only.
You will get much better value for money at one of the hotels near Bergamo Airport.
For example, opposite the terminal, on the other side of the A4 is NH Orio al Serio - a 4-star hotel that presents an outstanding value for money and proximity to the airport. The frequent and complimentary shuttle makes this hotel a no-brainer.
Another option is the Winter Garden Hotel, which is about 2 kilometers away. It also provides shuttle services to and from the airport and offers a marvelous spa center in addition to its already luxurious rooms, restaurant, and lobby.
