Logan International Airport (BOS) - Boston's primary airport

Logan International Airport is the main airport in the state of Massachusetts, serving Boston and its metropolitan area. On this page, you will learn more about its terminals, airlines, lounges, transport options, nearby hotels, and more.

Logan International Airport (BOS) is the main airport serving Boston and the Greater Boston area in the US state of Massachusetts. It is owned and operated by the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) together with two other smaller regional airports in the state.

In 2024, BOS handled a record-breaking 43.5 million passengers, making it the busiest airport in New England and within the top 20 in the United States.

Boston Logan is the busiest airport in the US's Northeast.

Major Airlines - Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, JetBlue, Cape Air

Logan Airport is home to Delta Air Lines - one of the US’s largest carriers, which offers direct flights to big cities in the US and Europe.

Boston is also a focus city for JetBlue, a regional American airline with flights to over 80 destinations in North America and Europe.

Not the least, Cape Air uses BOS as an operating base for its feeder flights from cities in Massachusetts.

Other US airlines with significant presence at Logan Airport include American Airlines, United Airlines, and Alaska Airlines, whereas international carriers who serve the airport include big airlines like British Airways, Lufthansa, Emirates, Qatar Airways, and Air France.

These airlines make Boston a city that’s very well-connected to the world at large, with nonstop services to numerous destinations across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and Latin America.

Terminal Layout and Gates of BOS

Boston Logan Airport consists of four passenger terminals:

  • Terminal A: Used almost exclusively by Delta Air Lines.

  • Terminal B: Hosts American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Spirit, and Air Canada.

  • Terminal C: Operated mainly by JetBlue Airways and Cape Air.

  • Terminal E: The international terminal, serving foreign carriers like Lufthansa, Emirates, British Airways, and more. All flights from outside the US, except for pre-cleared flights, arrive at Terminal E.

You may notice that Terminal D is missing. This is because it was absorbed by Terminal C during reconfiguration works in 2006. After that, the cost of replacing road signs (to make E into D, for example) was too high, so the airport stuck with these letters for the terminals.

Terminals B, C, and E are connected post-security via walkways, allowing easier transfers. Terminal A is separate and requires using the inter-terminal shuttle and re-clearing security. Moving between terminals landside is easy using the free shuttle buses that frequently go around the airport (see below).

Interterminal transportation

There are not one but a whole 6 different airport shuttles, all operated by Massport, so it may get a bit confusing.

Here’s a short summary of which airport shuttle lines go where:

  • Shuttle #11: Goes around all terminals only.

  • Shuttle #22: Connects the subway and rental car center with Terminals A and B.

  • Shuttle #33: Connects the subway and rental car center with Terminals C and E.

  • Shuttle #55: Goes through all areas of the airport and transportation hubs but only during off-peak times.

  • Shuttle #66: Runs between the water transportation dock and the terminals.

  • Shuttle #88: connects all terminals to the economy parking garage.

Connecting Flights and Transit at Boston Logan Airport

Logan Airport is relatively easy to navigate for connections, but a few important points are worth mentioning.

Terminals B, C, and E are connected airside (post-Security), so connecting flights between any of those terminals will not require additional screening as long as the two tickets were booked together as part of the same reservation. Self-connections require going through Immigration, re-checking luggage, and clearing Security again.

Terminal A is connected to the other terminal only before Security (landside), so transit requires using the pedestrian walkways or the free airport shuttle to reach the other terminals, then clearing security again.

All this being said, the suggested minimum connecting times are:

  • Domestic-to-domestic connections within the same terminal: 60 minutes.

  • Domestic-to-domestic connections from different terminals: 90 minutes.

  • International-to-domestic transfers: 120 minutes.

Wi-Fi at BOS

The airport provides free Wi-Fi throughout all terminals and public areas.

All you have to do to connect is select “BOSWifi” from the list of available networks, then open your browser and agree to the terms of service.

The connection is fast, unlimited, and generally stable enough for streaming and video calls, though if you want a premium Wi-Fi network, you can go to one of the VIP Lounges.

Dining Options at Logan Airport

Boston’s Logan Airport offers a solid variety of dining options, including sit-down restaurants, fast food, cafes, and bars. It’s a wonderful place for foodies, and you may struggle to pick where to eat during a layover.

Every terminal has its fair share of places to eat at, but keep in mind that most are located post-Security.

In Terminal A, the best dining options are:

  • Alta Strada serves Italian dishes and wine.

  • Buffalo Wild Wings GO offers amazing spicy chicken wings.

  • Legal Sea Foods has the freshest seafood at the airport.

In Terminal B, you can choose to eat at:

  • Stephanie’s is a full-service option offering American classics.

  • Kelly's Roast Beef is a regional Massachusetts chain serving roast beef sandwiches, lobster rolls, and other seafood.

  • Not Your Average Joe's: a restaurant with a mission to include students and adults with intellectual, developmental, and physical disabilities in the creation of amazing food and coffee.

Terminal C houses some nice restaurants and bars, such as:

  • Boston Bruins Bar delivers pub fare with a sports atmosphere.

  • B.GOOD is a health-conscious fast-casual option.

  • Santarpio's should be your go-to place for authentic Italian pizza.

Finally, the international Terminal E is in no way lacking behind the others in terms of dining establishments. Some of them are:

  • Monica's Mercato: a salumeria selling imported Italian meats.

  • Peet's at Night: A coffee and liquor bar.

  • Wow Bao serves Chinese buns and other delicacies from the East.

Multiple Dunkin’ outlets are spread throughout all terminals, reflecting Boston’s love for its local Massachusetts brand.

Lounges at Logan Airport

When it comes to lounges, BOS Airport is one of the best. There are several airline and independent lounges around the airport, with at least one in each terminal.

Here’s a shortlist of VIP lounges and where to find them:

  • Delta Sky Club is in Terminal A, across from Gate A7

  • American Airlines Admirals Club has 2 lounges in Terminal B:
    • Near Gate B4 (south side).

    • Near Gate B30 (north side).

  • United Club is in Terminal B between B23 and B24.

  • Chase Sapphire Lounge by The Club: Located between Terminal B and Terminal C, near Gates B39/40. It is perhaps the best non-first-class lounge at BOS. You can use Priority Pass to enter.

  • The Lounge (independent) is in Terminal C, between C18 and C19. Priority Pass can be used to enter this lounge, and some airlines offer complimentary access to it.

  • Lufthansa Lounge in Terminal E, level 4.

  • British Airways Lounge in Terminal E, outside Gate 11.

  • Air France Lounge in Terminal E, level 4. Priority Pass can be used here.

  • Emirates Lounge in Terminal E. The newest lounge at BOS which offers the most modern and premium amenities.

JetBlue is also expected to open its first-ever lounge in Terminal C in 2025, aimed at its Mint class customers and frequent flyers.

Transportation to and from Boston Logan Airport

Logan is well-connected to downtown Boston. Multiple modes of transport can get you to places around Greater Boston or farther afield in Massachusetts.

Public Transport options:

  • Logan Express: Buses operated by the airport’s managing entity, Massport. They run between the airport and suburban locations like Braintree, Framingham, Woburn, and Danvers. These buses depart every 30-60 minutes.

  • MBTA Blue Line stops near the airport but technically off-site. It is connected to terminals by free Massport shuttles.

  • Silver Line SL1 Bus is an alternative to the Blue Line way of getting into the city. It offers free service from Logan to South Station with connections to Amtrak and the Red Line.

  • Ferries and water taxis: Due to its location beside the ocean, Logan can be reached by sea. It has its own Logan Ferry Terminal with public boats to Winthrop, Hingham, and Hull. Bus 66 connects the Ferry Terminal with the airport. Private water taxis also take passengers to locations around the Bay, notably Long Wharf.

Private Transport options:

  • Taxis and rideshares: Whether you take an airport taxi or a ride-sharing one (Uber or Lyft), the price is pretty much the same. If anything, airport taxis are available almost immediately, whereas you may have to wait to be picked up by the ridesharing apps. A ride to downtown Boston costs approximately 30 to 40 USD.

  • Rental cars are housed in a consolidated Rental Car Center. All car rental companies operate from there.

  • Private transfer: Check offers for exclusive limousine service for private transfer to Boston.

You can access downtown Boston in under 30 minutes in normal traffic conditions using any of the methods above.

Parking at Logan Airport

Logan offers 4 main parking options, all managed by Massport:

  • Central Parking Garage: Offers easy access to all terminals via pedestrian bridges, with, as the name suggests, a very central location between them.

  • Terminal B Parking Garage: Located between the two wings of Terminal B, it is a convenient short or long-term parking option for those flying from Terminal B.

The parking fees at the Central and Terminal B garages are the same: 9 USD for the first hour, capped at 41 USD per day.

  • Terminal E Garages: Currently CLOSED.

  • Economy Parking Lot, located further out, but served by free 24/7 shuttle buses. Daily prices here are cheaper at just 32 USD per day. Maximum vehicle height here is 8'2".

You can pay at the kiosks located directly at the car parks, either by cash or card, or pre-pay your reservation online.

Hotels near Logan Airport

The best airport hotel in terms of proximity to Logan’s terminals is the Hilton Boston Logan Airport. It is directly connected to Terminals A and E by a sky bridge, plus it offers a complimentary shuttle to all terminals and the pier. Although on the pricey side, the quiet rooms with amazing views make up for it.

Other nearby hotels are:

  • Hyatt Regency Boston Harbor: It offers waterfront views and a free shuttle service from its location beside the Ferry Terminal.

  • Embassy Suites by Hilton Boston: Located a short walk from the train and in a quiet area. Also runs a complimentary shuttle to the terminals. The evening reception with snacks and drinks is a highlight for many guests.
