EuroAirport Basel–Mulhouse–Freiburg (BSL) - Europe's trinational airport

EuroAirport Basel–Mulhouse–Freiburg is one of the few binational airports in the world. France and Switzerland own it, though it also serves Germany. Find out more about this unique airport, including everything about its terminal, airlines, parking options, transportation, and nearby hotels.

EuroAirport Basel–Mulhouse–Freiburg (BSL) is one of the most unique international airports in the world as it's located near the tripoint of France, Germany, and Switzerland and officially serves all three countries (though it’s jointly operated by just France and the Swiss canton of Basel-City). Besides that, it functions much the same way as most other European airports.

It is situated entirely within France, near the town of Saint-Louis, mere minutes from both Basel and Lörrach, the closest cities in Switzerland and Germany, respectively. BSL is thus a vital hub for the Upper Rhine region.

In 2024, the airport handled nearly 9 million passengers, connecting travelers to more than 100 destinations across Europe and beyond.

Major Airlines

EuroAirport is not a hub for any airline, but it’s an important operating base for easyJet Switzerland, a European low-cost franchisee that connects BSL to over 70 destinations across the Old Continent, North Africa, and Turkey.

easyJet is the airline with the most flights at EuroAirport.

The next airlines with the most flights operated to and from EuroAirport are also low-cost: the Hungarian Wizz Air and the Turkish Pegasus Airlines, and SunExpress.

Major European airlines that serve BSL include Air France, Lufthansa, KLM, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, and Aegean Airlines.

The airport also provides direct connections to cities in the Middle East (Istanbul, served by Turkish Airlines, and Dubai, served by Emirates, to name two) and as far as Montreal, courtesy of Air Transat

These and other, make up the nearly 30 airlines that provide connectivity for millions of people living in Basel, Mulhouse, and Freiburg to major cities and holiday destinations across Europe, North Africa, the Middle East, and North America.

Wizz Air flies from BSL to many cities in Eastern Europe.

Terminal Layout of BSL

EuroAirport has a single terminal building divided into French and Swiss sectors and spread over four levels:

  • Level 1: Basement housing car parks.

  • Level 2: Arrivals area with passport control and baggage claim.

  • Level 3: Departures area with check-in counters and security checkpoints.

  • Level 4: Airside lounges and boarding gates.

Be mindful of the sector (French or Swiss) you land at or depart from, as it may affect customs and immigration procedures.

Connecting Flights and Transit at BSL

There is no dedicated airside transfer area at BSL. This means that all international arrivals must pass through Immigration and Customs, then proceed to the departures level for security checks before boarding your next flight.

If you arrive from an airport within the Schengen area and proceed to a flight to a destination outside of Schengen, you will only need to clear Immigration and Customs in EuroAirport. The other way around is much the same.

If both flights are within the Schengen Area, they will be treated like domestic flights, and you won’t have to pass through Immigration.

Wi-Fi at EuroAirport Basel–Mulhouse–Freiburg

EuroAirport offers free and unlimited Wi-Fi throughout the terminal.

To connect, select the "Free EuroAirport WiFi" network. That’s it! There is no need for registration or OTP codes, and the network is not time-limited.

The Turkish low-cost airline Pegasus flies to and from BSL Airport.

Dining Options at Basel Airport

Because of ongoing renovation, very few restaurants and bars remain open. Depending on when you’re reading this, more dining establishments may have reopened, but for now, these are your options:

  • La Brasserie du 5ème: A bistronomic restaurant located on Level 5 in the French sector. It is open from 11:00 to 16:00 but adapted to flight schedules.

  • Trib's: A café and bakery offering sandwiches, salads, and beverages on Level 2 in the French sector. Open from 07:00 to 22:30.

  • Weckmann: Fast food items like burgers, pizza, sandwiches, and salads, prepackaged and ready to go! Find it on Level 3 of the Swiss sector.

  • Bert’s: A mix of a cafe with fast food, and a convenience store. Located in the passenger zone on Level 4. Working hours: 4:15 to 21:00.

  • Columbus Café & Co.: A coffee shop on the Jetway, Level 4, of the passenger zone. Open from 04:30 until the last flight of the day.

Lounges at BSL

The Skyview Lounge is the only lounge at EuroAirport available for passengers.

It is located on Level 4, near the gates, and offers complimentary food and beverages, free Wi-Fi, and panoramic runway views. The vast glass dome and the delicate, relaxing ambiance create a magnificent place to relax and unwind before a flight.

Any passenger can enter, as long as they have a valid boarding pass and pay the entry fee at the lounge’s reception. Priority Pass and LoungePass members are eligible to enter, too.

It’s open every day from 05:00 until 21:00.

Transport to and from EuroAirport

Given its proximity to 3 countries, it’s no surprise that the airport is very well connected to many regional destinations via public transport.

Several regular buses connect the airport to nearby cities:

  • For French-bound travel, take Bus Line 11 towards Saint-Louis Train Station. It runs every day from 05:00 to 24:00, with the ride taking only 10 minutes. The ticket costs 3 EUR, payable by SMS.

  • To get to Basel city center, take Bus Line 50 terminating at Bahnhof SBB (Basel railway station). Fares are approximately CHF 3-5.

  • For German-bound travel, take the 220 FREUND regional bus, which connects EuroAirport to Lörrach and Freiburg.

  • FlixBus: Offers direct services to Freiburg, Colmar, and Strasbourg.

The airport lacks a direct train station, but worry not - separate shuttle buses link it to Basel SBB, Saint-Louis, and Freiburg stations. At each, you can board local trains (SBB in Switzerland, SNCF in France, and DB in Germany) to further destinations within each corresponding country.

Taxis are generally expensive compared to public transit, but offer more flexibility and convenience. You can grab a taxi in front of the terminal, on both the French and the Swiss sides. Here are some approximate fares:

  • To Mulhouse Central Station: €60-65 (during the day), €85-90 (during the night)

  • To Freiburg Central Station: €155-165 (day) - €225-235 (night)

  • To Colmar Central Station: €125-135 (day) - €170-180 (night)

  • To Basel: 50 CHF

  • To Freiburg: 340 CHF (flat rate)

  • To Zurich: 440 CHF (flat rate)

Several companies provide taxi services with very little difference in service quality or price.

Last but not least, you can rent a car in both the French and the Swiss sectors. There are at least 5 companies on each side, so you always have a choice and can compare prices. The rental car companies are located in Hall 1, Level 2 of the French Sector and Hall 4, Level 2 of the Swiss Sector.
