Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) - a convenient alternative for Los Angeles

Hollywood Burbank Airport is a small public airport serving Burbank, Hollywood, and the northern Greater Los Angeles area. In this guide, you will find all the necessary information about the airport's terminals, airlines, restaurants, parking, and transportation options.

Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) is a public airport in Los Angeles County, California. It is also known by many of its former names, chiefly Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport and Bob Hope Airport. The current official name of Hollywood Burbank dates from 2017.

The airport is situated ~3 miles (5 km) from Burbank, California, and about 12 miles (19 km) north of downtown Los Angeles. Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) is a good, quieter alternative to LAX, particularly for destinations in the San Fernando Valley, Hollywood, or Pasadena areas.

In recent years, Hollywood Burbank serves around 6-7 million passengers per annum.

In January 2024, the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority broke ground on a new terminal (the “Elevate BUR” project).

Major Airlines - Southwest Airlines

Hollywood Burbank Airport is not a hub for any airline, but it is served by most major U.S. carriers.

Southwest Airlines captures the largest market share at BUR - more than half of all passengers moving through the airport fly with Southwest. The airline operates more than 100 flights per month, serving nearly 20 destinations.

Alaska, American, Delta, and United also fly to and from Burbank. Of these, Alaska stands out with its 9 direct destinations from BUR, whereas the other legacy carriers normally only fly to a select few hubs in the US.

JetBlue, Spirit, Allegiant, Avelo, and Frontier serve the low-cost segment of the market.

JSX, a public charter operator that operates point-to-point flights between and within many southern and southwestern states in the USA, uses Hollywood Burbank as an operating base and provides frequent and seasonal flights to around 10 destinations in the US and Mexico.

Terminal Layout and Gates

Hollywood Burbank has two terminals within 1 building:

  • Terminal A has 9 gates numbered from A1 to A9.

  • Terminal B has 5 gates numbered from B1 to B5.

Each terminal has its own TSA checkpoint. The terminals are connected by a short indoor walkway. It takes just 3 minutes walking to move between the two terminals.

The existing terminal dates back many decades, but the “Elevate BUR” project will replace it with a single-level terminal, 14 gates, modernized ticketing, a new TSA checkpoint, an updated baggage claim, and a new parking structure with EV charging stations. Building started in January 2024 and is expected to finish in October 2026.

Connecting Flights and Transit

Hollywood Burbank Airport is small, and connections are very straightforward. Walking between gates or terminals takes minimal time. There’s no need for shuttle transfer or re-screening when moving between Terminals A and B.

However, if you need to transfer between Terminals A and B, you will have to clear Security again. Allow extra time between flights for that.

Nearly all flights at BUR are domestic.

The future terminal redevelopment, Elevate BUR, will improve flow, redesign concourses and broader public spaces, thus making connecting flights even easier.

Wi-Fi and other services

Free WiFi is available throughout the terminal, provided by NBC4. To connect, select the #NBCWiFi network. If you are an AT&T or Verizon customer, you will also have secure access to your account on their laptop and mobile devices.

Other passenger services at BUR include:

  • ATMs: Several, spread throughout the terminals.

  • Nursing pods: Located between Gates A4 and A5 in Terminal A, and opposite Gate B4 in Terminal B, both airside, after Security.

  • Lost & Found: Operated by the airport police. It’s located in Terminal B Arrivals, open every weekday from 8 AM to 4 PM. Contact +1 818 729 2231.

  • TDD Phones: Located near Gates A1, A6, B3, and the Terminal B lobby.

  • Pet Relief Areas: Located landside, outdoors, in the patio between the two terminals, and also airside, in Terminal A, across from Gate A4.

Lounges at BUR

As of 2025, there are no dedicated airline or pay-per-use lounges at Hollywood Burbank Airport.

Dining Options at Hollywood Burbank Airport

BUR offers several dining and refreshment options in both terminals, including cafés, snack bars, quick-service food, and sit-down restaurants throughout the terminals.

Because the terminal is relatively compact, food outlets are close to gate areas and check-in.

For sandwiches, salads, and quick snacks, try Guy’s Sammich Joint (near Gate A1 and A7 in Terminal A and near Gate B3 in Terminal B) or Perry’s Joint Sandwiches near Gate A5.

American fare you can have at Guy Fieri’s Burbank Kitchen and Bar (near Gate B3), The Highball Lounge (near Gate A5), and Guy’s Burger Joint (near Gate A5).

The Lunch Box is the only dining option before Security - it’s close to the main entrance to the airport.

Worth checking is also Diane Mina’s Backyard Bar & Eats, which serves beverages and snacks near Gate A3.

You can get coffee from Starbucks near Gate A4 or Jones Coffee Roasters near Gate A6 or Gate B1.

Transport to and from the airport.

Ground access to the airport is via Interstate 5 and Empire Avenue (depending on direction), Hollywood Way and Pass Avenue exits off State Route 134 (again depending on direction), Victory Boulevard exit off State Route 170, and Barham Boulevard exit off U.S. Route 101.

Driving time to Burbank is around 5-8 minutes. Driving to Downtown Los Angeles takes around 20 minutes.

The airport is connected to local bus services. The on-site Regional Intermodal Transportation Center (RITC) serves as a hub for transit. The terminals are directly accessible from the RITC via an elevated moving walkway.

On the ground level of the RITC, you can take:

  • Metro Bus Route 222: Runs to Universal City Station.

  • Burbank Orange Bus: Runs to North Hollywood station.

The Amtrak Thruway bus service stops on Empire Avenue across from the Burbank Airport-South station. It provides a twice-daily service to Santa Monica, UCLA, Van Nuys, Newhall, and Bakersfield.

Metrolink, a regional railway service, also stops near the airport.

The Burbank Airport-North station is on the Antelope Valley Line. To reach the station, take the free, on-demand shuttle from/to the terminals or the Metro 294 bus, which is free if you have a Metrolink ticket.

The Burbank Airport-South station is on the Ventura County Line.

Both stations run to downtown Los Angeles, Ventura County, and the Antelope Valley.

Shuttles and taxis are located immediately in front of the terminals. Official taxi providers include United Taxi, LA City Cab, and Beverly Hills Cab.

Ridesharing, app-based providers have their pick-up locations at the ground transportation island across from the Terminal B entrance. These include Uber and Lyft.

Several local hotels operate shuttles to and from the airport for their guests. To see information about private shuttles, click here.

Car Rental at Hollywood Burbank Airport

The rental car pick-up and drop-off location is inside the Regional Intermodal Transportation Center (RITC). Ten companies offering over 1000 rental cars can be found there. These include Dollar, Enterprise, Fox, Hertz, National, Payless, and Thrifty.

To return a car, use the entrance on Avenue B, accessible via Hollywood Way and Empire Avenue.
