Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) is a major airport in North Carolina, USA. It often ranks among the busiest airports in the country, handling over 58 million passengers in 2024. For the same year, CLT ranked in the top 25 busiest airports in the world.
The airport is located 6 miles west of Charlotte's central business district (Uptown Charlotte) in southwestern North Carolina.
CLT serves as a primary fortress hub for American Airlines and offers direct or non-stop flights to more than 180 destinations worldwide.
Major Airlines - American Airlines
American Airlines is the dominant airline at Charlotte Douglas Airport with almost 70% market share. It operates over 20000 flights per month to over 170 destinations.
American Eagle, its subsidiary, operates many of the regional flights from CLT.
The next airlines with the most flights from CLT are the low-cost Spirit Airlines and Frontier Airlines. They provide a cheaper, usually stripped-down, experience, alternative to the classic airlines.
Talking of which, full-service US airlines with regular flights to and from CLT include the rest of the Big 4: Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines. Together, their market share is under 6% of the total passengers using CLT.
The independent regional airline Contour Airlines provides approximately 10 flights daily to smaller airports in the Southeast.
Charlotte Airport also welcomes several international carriers, including Lufthansa, Air Canada, and Volaris.

Terminal Layout and Gates of CLT
Charlotte Douglas International Airport has just one terminal. It is split into five concourses (A through E), encompassing 124 gates.
All concourses are accessible under one roof, so there is no need for trams, shuttles, or buses. This also makes transfers quite easy and getting lost - almost impossible.
Concourse A: The second largest concourse with 32 gates. American Airlines takes up the main pier, while the two extension piers to the north are served by other US airlines, plus Air Canada.
Concourse B: American uses this concourse for domestic flights. It has 16 gates.
Concourse C: American uses this concourse for domestic flights. It has 18 gates
Concourse D: This concourse handles all non-precleared international flights. The 13 gates are used by American, Volaris, and Lufthansa.
Concourse E: The largest concourse. It has 45 gates predominantly used by American Eagle, making it the largest express flight operation in the world. Since 2023, gates E1 to E3 have been used by Contour Airlines.
Connecting Flights and Transit at Charlotte
The minimum connecting time between flights at Charlotte Douglas Airport is just 35 minutes, due to the single terminal layout. If you don’t come from abroad, you can walk airside to your new gate in order to connect between flights.
If entering the US on a flight that’s not pre-cleared and proceeding on a domestic flight, you will have to clear Immigration and Customs, re-check your luggage (even if flying the same airline, in the case of CLT, this is American Airlines), and re-enter the secure area to go to your new gate. A minimum of 1 hour is recommended for such connections, though at peak times this may not be enough.

Wi-Fi at CLT
CLT provides complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi throughout the entire terminal building.
The network is called "CLT Free WiFi". When you select it, the welcome page will open automatically. You will need to enter your email address and agree to the terms and conditions to connect.
It is not limited in duration or bandwidth.
Dining Options at Charlotte Douglas
Being among the busiest airports in the US guarantees a good selection of places to eat (all these 58 million passengers need to eat and drink!).
From national favorites offering comfort fast food, through local North Carolina specialties, to top-class restaurants, CLT has something for everyone. 1897 Market in the Atrium is a modern market serving American staples like burgers and pizzas, as well as culinary curiosities like oysters and cocktail kits.
Bad Daddy’s Burger Bar near Gate C6 makes the best bacon cheeseburgers at the airport.
Bojangles is the place to go if you fancy Southern cuisine, including Cajun chicken. Find it in the Plaza.
Summer House is difficult to beat when it comes to light meals like avocado toasts and grilled salmon. Located near Gate B6.
Whisky River in the E Rotunda is a bar with country music and diverse southern offerings.
Beaudevin. Fancy a drink under chandeliers made of wine glasses? Yes, this is Beaudevin. With drinks from around the world, you will be spoiled for choice. Find it in the Atrium.
Captain Jack’s Tavern is a classic bar backed by a dozen 10-foot-high windows, so views are basically part of the menu.
Noda Brewing Company. If you’ve never had a Charlottean beer before, this is the place. To be specific, it’s next to Gate A26.
Fast food joints from the likes of McDonald’s, KFC, Subway, Shake Shack, etc. are liberally spread around the concourses with at least 2 different options at each.
You can easily get coffee from Starbucks, but our recommendation goes to Commonspace on the D-E walkway connector, famous around Durham (and North Carolina as a whole) for its coffee culture.
Lounges at CLT
Depending on what you consider one, there are up to 9 lounges at Charlotte Douglas Airport.
The most prominent one is the American Airlines Admirals Clubs: one is located in Concourse B, near Gate B3, and one more is between Concourses C and D, on the connector.
Both are open daily between 5:15 AM and 10:45 PM. You can expect free food and a full-service bar, workstations, and an exclusive Wi-Fi network.
Entrance is available to same-day American Airlines first or business class passengers or anyone else flying AA for a 79 USD fee.
Delta Sky Club is the airport's newest and second-largest lounge. It’s located between Gates A38 and A39 and open from 5 AM until 8 PM. Its 14-seat bar is a unique feature, alone worth the entrance fee for this lounge, which depends on membership level.
The two independent classic airport lounges are The Club CLT in Concourse A, before Gates A21 and A22, and the Centurion Lounge on the Concourses D/E connector. You may use Priority Pass for the former, but you need to be a premium American Express credit card holder to enter the latter. Both open at 5 AM and close at 9:30 PM.
It would be amiss not to mention the USO Lounge in the Atrium, which serves active military members and their families. It’s open from 6 AM until 6 PM and offers much the same amenities as other airport lounges, but in a cozier, homier ambiance.
Additionally, Minute Suites offers private rooms for relaxation in the Main Atrium.
Last but not least, the Gameway Lounge is an awesome way to kill time if you love video games or consoles. Priority Pass allows you to stay for an hour; longer than that, and you should just buy the unlimited pass for 46 USD. It’s in Concourse E, opposite Gate 36, open from 7 AM to 8 PM.
Transportation at Charlotte Airport
Most travelers use a private vehicle to reach the airport. Driving directions depend on where you are coming from, and it’s best to use a navigation app. The airport is situated roughly between Interstate 485, Interstate 85, and Billy Graham Parkway.
Public transportation at CLT is provided by the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS). Services are color-coded:
Green for local and neighborhood shuttles
Red for express routes
Blue for the rail line.
The two bus lines serving the airport are:
Route 5-Airport (Sprinter) to the Charlotte Transportation Center in Uptown Charlotte.
Route 60-Tyvola Road to LYNX Tyvola Station.
Taxis are available curbside outside of Arrivals. The four taxi companies that are officially designated by the airport are City Cab, Crown Cab, Green Cab, and Yellow Cab. Look for the decal print on the vehicle door. A typical trip to the city center costs around 30-35 USD.
Ridesharing app-based rides have their designated pick-up location at the Departures Level, Zones 1-3.
You can rent a car from one of the 8 companies at the Rental Car Facility, located in the Level 2 lobby of the Hourly Deck opposite the terminal.

Parking at Charlotte Airport
Within its premises, Charlotte Airport has hourly and daily decks (covered) as well as daily and long-term lots (uncovered).
Here’s a brief summary of all available parking options:
Hourly Deck: Located adjacent to the terminal for short-term parking on a first-come-first-served basis. The first 15 minutes are free, with an hourly rate of 8 USD and a daily cap of 32 USD thereafter.
Daily Decks: Provide long-term parking with shuttle service to the terminal. Must be booked online via parkclt.com or the CLT Airport app. The daily max fee is 20 USD.
Daily North Lot: Uncovered economical option with a shuttle service to the terminal provided. Has a daily cap of 14 USD.
Long-Term Lots: Two lots, both with shuttle service to the terminal. Must be booked online. Daily max of 12 USD.
Cell Phone Lot: It’s free to remain inside, but you must remain in the vehicle. Most suitable when waiting for a passenger to arrive. It’s located right next to Long Term Lot 1.
Express Deck Preferred: A premium parking option only available for pre-booking online. An attendant will take care of the parking. Capped at 24 USD per day. Offers a designated express deck shuttle.
Express Deck Self-Park: It’s the same Express Deck parking space, but you park by yourself, and it costs 20 USD per day. Also includes the shuttle to the terminal.
Valet Parking: Ultra convenient parking where you just leave your car with a parking attendant at the terminal entrance and not worry about anything. Has a 45 USD daily max. Available from 5 AM until 10 PM.
Hotels near Charlotte Douglas Airport
While there are no hotels inside the terminal or within the airport’s premises, you can use a bed provided in the hourly rooms of Minute Suites in the Atrium. While not a proper hotel, it allows you to rest and/or take a nap while being at the airport, perfect for short or medium layovers.
All other accommodation options are located at least 1.5 miles from the terminal.
The closest hotel is the Hampton Inn & Suites Charlotte-Airport, a 3-star hotel with great attention to detail and lovely rooms. It offers a complimentary shuttle to and from the terminal.
