Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO) - the second busiest airport in Catalonia, Spain

Girona-Costa Brava Airport is the second major commercial airport in Catalonia after Barcelona. In this guide for passengers, you will find more information about the airport's terminal, airlines, dining options, transportation, parking, nearby hotels, and other services.

Girona-Costa Brava Airport (GRO) is the second-busiest airport in the Spanish region of Catalonia.

The airport is located 12 km south of Girona or around 90 km northeast of Barcelona. Most travelers fly into it to visit the Costa Brava region, including Lloret de Mar, Tossa de Mar, Platja d'Aro, Roses, and Cadaqués, though it is also a suitable alternative to Barcelona’s El Prat Airport (BCN).

Girona Airport became popular in the early 2000s, when Ryanair opened a large base as an ultra-low-cost gateway to Barcelona. The Irish low-cost carrier has since moved most of its operations to El Prat, though many routes to and from GRO remain.

GRO handles about 2-3 million passengers yearly, with a marked seasonality peak in the summer.

Major Airlines - Ryanair, Jet2.com

Despite moving a lot of its planes and routes to Barcelona, Ryanair continues to maintain a strong presence at Girona-Costa Brava Airport. As a matter of fact, it is the only airline to fly year-round to the airport. It flies to European and Moroccan destinations such as London-Stansted, Birmingham, Charleroi, Nuremberg, Kraków, Marrakech, and others. Ryanair adds more than 20 new routes to Girona during the summer.

In the warmer months, GRO receives flights from several charter airlines such as Jet2.com and TUI Airways (from the UK), Enter Air and Smartwings (from Poland).

Fly with Jet2.com from the UK to Girona-Costa Brava Airport.

Other airlines that have 1 or 2 routes to Girona include Wizz Air, Transavia, and Air Arabia.

Terminal Layout and Gates

Girona-Costa Brava Airport has just one small two-storey terminal:

  • The ground floor contains 33 check-in desks and a single Security Checkpoint.

  • The first floor is the departure area with 11 gates.

If you’re traveling in the summer, allow extra time before your flight, even though the terminal is quite compact. Crowding and chokepoints can happen throughout the day.

The airport remains open 24/7, though staying indoors outside of flight hours is generally discouraged.

Free Wi-Fi and other services

Girona Airport offers free WiFi throughout the terminal. To connect, select “Airport Free Wifi Aena” from the list of available networks, which will automatically open the welcome portal.

There, enter your email address and verify your account using the code you will receive via email. After that, you will be able to use the internet without time limitations.

Other passenger services at GRO include:

  • ATMs: Caixabank and Santander have cash machines on Floor 0 in the Check-in area and the Baggage Reclaim area, as well as on Floor 1 in the Boarding area.

  • Post office: There is a post box landside.

  • Lost Luggage: Contact the airport security office in the technical block. If you lost the item on an aircraft, contact the responsible handling agent - Aviapartner, Azul handling, or South Europe Ground Services.

  • Children’s play areas: One is located on Floor 1 in the Boarding area, and one is on the North Terrace.

  • Free pushchairs for children and babies.

  • Tourist information: A desk on Floor 0 of Arrivals.

  • Smoking areas: There are three outdoor terraces in the boarding area.

  • Water fountains: Several in the airside boarding area.

  • Arcade machines: Free to use on Floor 1 of the terminal.

  • Book exchange point: Located on Floor 1.

Dining Options at Girona-Costa Brava Airport

As a small airport with mostly low-cost carriers, Girona-Costa Brava offers few different dining options.

Here are all 7 presently available places:

  • Budweiser: Offers a variety of local and imported beers on Floor 1, airside.

  • Burger King: A popular flame-grilled burger chain, located airside.

  • Como: A mix between a restaurant and a cafe with grab&go options. Located airside.

  • Exploring the World: Offers San Miguel Beers and comfort food. Located landside.

  • Foodies’: Grab a sandwich, coffee, or desserts, including many Spanish delicacies. Located airside.

  • Lavazza: A simple place to buy coffee in the public zone on Level 0.

  • Xoco: A popular ice-cream chain.

All outlets are open according to flight schedules.

There are also over a dozen vending machines for drinks, snacks, and other essentials.

Ryanair is the largest airline at GRO and it jumpstarted the airport's popularity in the early 2000s.

Transport to and from the airport

Buses by Sagalés, Moventis, Flixbus, and Alsa connect GRO with Costa Brava, Lleida, Girona, Barcelona, Perpignan and Montpellier (France), Andorra, and others.

Useful bus lines include:

  • Line 86 (Moventis) and Line 613 (Sagalés) to Lloret de Mar. Prices around 10-12 EUR.

  • Line 605 (Sagalés) to Malgrat de Mar, Blanes, Pineda de Mar, and Canet de Mar. Prices around 9-14 EUR.

  • Lines 602 and 604 (Sagalés) to Barcelona (either Estació del Nord or El Prat Airport). Prices around 18 EUR one-way or 30 EUR return.

  • Lines 602 and 607 (Sagalés) to Girona.

Taxis are available outside Arrivals, but they only make sense for closer destinations as prices get steep quite quickly for farther ones. Urban fares apply within the municipality of Vilobí d'Onyar, while intercity fares are set by the Generalitat de Catalunya. For example, taxi fares to Girona are around 30 EUR, while a taxi to Barcelona will set you back at least 150 EUR with surcharges during the night or on weekends.

Uber is also available and usually has slightly lower prices than traditional taxis.

Renting a car is perhaps the most convenient form of transportation around the Costa Brava region and/or the Pyrenees. Most major international car rental companies have desks in GRO’s Arrival Hall. Prices depend heavily on the season - summer rentals cost nearly double winter ones.

Parking at Girona Airport

Girona-Costa Brava Airport offers a 3600-space car park just 10 meters from the Terminal.

For short stays, such as dropping off someone at the airport, the parking fee is just 1.10 EUR for up to 30 minutes. Hourly rates are around 2.20 EUR per hour, up to a daily maximum of 10.50 to 15 EUR, depending on the season.

You can get up to a 25% discount if you book in advance or join the Aena Customer Club.

Hotels near GRO

There are three suitable hotels in proximity to the airport that you can stay in if you have a very early flight, a late arrival, or in the event of a flight cancellation:

  • Hotel Vilobí: Walking distance from the terminal (~350 meters). It’s a 3-star hotel with mixed reviews about its quality, although praised for its convenience and cleanliness.

  • Hotel Eden Park by Brava Hotels: Located about a 5-minute drive from the terminal. A Nice, clean, and comfortable 4-star hotel.

  • Hotel Sallés Aeroport Girona: A 4-star hotel with an outdoor pool about 1.5 km from the terminal building. The highest-rated of the three, albeit by a little.

If you are in need of a rental car, there are several options at GRO.

Airport transfer and taxi

If you are arriving at Girona and want to go to the city, you have several options. You can take a bus, a taxi, or a rental car. The bus is the cheapest and most convenient option, as it runs frequently. The taxi is more expensive and may take longer depending on the traffic. The rental car gives you more flexibility, but you have to pay for parking and fuel.
