Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS), also known as Lisbon Airport, is Portugal’s busiest airport and one of Europe’s most important ones.
The airport is located 7 km north of Lisbon’s city center and is owned by the Government of Portugal.
In 2024, LIS handled over 35 million passengers, making it the 12th busiest airport in Europe and the second-busiest single-runway airport on the continent, after London Gatwick.
Humberto Delgado is already handling more flights than its capacity allows. This is why plans are currently underway to construct a new airport in Alcochete, some 40 km east of Lisbon. The new airport has an expected opening date sometime in 2034.

Major Airlines - TAP Air Portugal, Azores Airlines, easyJet, Ryanair
LIS is the main hub for TAP Air Portugal, the country’s flag carrier. It serves the greatest number of destinations, connecting Lisbon to numerous cities in Europe, North America, South America, Africa, and Asia.
Lisbon is a focus city for another Portuguese airline, Azores Airlines. Its main target is to connect the mainland with the Azores islands.
Lisbon Airport also handles hundreds of flights daily by low-cost airlines. The two with the most flights and destinations are easyJet and Ryanair. Other European low-cost carriers serving LIS include Vueling, Transavia, Wizz Air, Eurowings, and Volotea.
Other than that, Lisbon also receives many of Europe’s largest airlines, such as Aer Lingus, Air France, British Airways, Lufthansa, KLM, SWISS, and others. These connect the Portuguese capital to the biggest airports in the Old Continent, also allowing connections to farther places.
This is not to say you cannot fly directly from Lisbon to many places around the world. Helping TAP Air Portugal are some of the world’s biggest airlines, including Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, Turkish Airlines, Air Canada, Delta Air Lines, American Airlines, Beijing Capital Airlines, among others.

Terminal Layout and Gates of LIS
Lisbon Airport has two terminals located close but not adjacent to one another:
Terminal 1 (T1): The main terminal. It handles all arrivals and most departures, including those of full-service carriers and international flights. It features 47 gates, 17 of which are equipped with jet bridges.
Terminal 2 (T2): A smaller terminal dedicated exclusively to 6 low-cost carriers: Ryanair, Wizz Air, Transavia, Eurowings, Vueling, and Norwegian Air Shuttle. It is only a departure terminal - if arriving at LIS with any airline, you will land at Terminal 1. T2 has 15 departure gates, using walk boarding and sometimes a bus.
A free shuttle bus runs every ten minutes between the two terminals.
Connecting Flights and Transit
Your transit experience at Lisbon Airport depends on several factors, including your departure and destination countries, whether you have booked the two flights under the same reservation (PNR), and potentially your nationality.
For starters, if you have two separate flights (note that most low-cost flights would result in a self-connection), your connection is not guaranteed.
If you are only flying within the Schengen Area, no additional checks are required. Just head to the boarding gate of your next flight.
If one of your flights is within the Schengen Area, but the other isn’t, you will need to go through Passport Control and Security.
Lastly, if you’re coming from outside Schengen and proceeding to a destination outside the area too, you may remain within the International Transit Area. In this case, you won’t have to go through Immigration, only Security, and in most cases, don’t need a visa.
Longer layovers may give you enough time to explore the Portuguese capital. Check out the best things to do in Lisbon.

Free Wi-Fi at Lisbon Airport
LIS provides free and unlimited Wi-Fi throughout all common areas of both terminals of the airport.
To connect, select the “VINCI Airports WiFi” network, which will automatically open a splash page. Once there, accept the terms and conditions, and you can start browsing. Easy!
Dining Options at Humberto Delgado Airport
LIS offers a good selection of places to eat, both local and international, in Terminal 1:
O Mercado: Traditional Portuguese dishes like 'Bacalhau à Brás' paired with local wines.
La Pausa: Known for its 'Piri Piri Chicken' and refreshing sangria.
Pastelaria Versailles: Famous for 'Pastel de Nata' (Portuguese custard tarts) and strong espresso.
Portela Café: Portuguese classics like the 'Francesinha Sandwich' and 'Bica' coffee. Also available in Terminal 2.
My Bistro: Quick local dishes and Portuguese beer.
Hediard: Charcuterie boards and a selection of French and Portuguese wines.
Terminal 2, owing to its dedication to low-cost airlines, has way fewer options. You won’t find a proper sit-down restaurant there and will have to settle for some fast food (e.g., McDonald's) and a coffee instead (e.g., Soho Coffee Co.).

Lounges at Humberto Delgado Airport
LIS has 4 lounges, all located within Terminal 1:
ANA Lounge: Located above Praça Lisboa ('Lisbon Square') on the 6th Floor, near Gate 22. Available for business class passengers of both Schengen and non-Schengen flights and Priority Pass members. Note that you still have to clear Security to reach your gate from this lounge. It offers plenty of sitting space, refreshments, and showers for an additional fee.
TAP Premium Lounge Tejo: Located next door to the ANA lounge. This lounge caters to those flying with TAP Portugal and offers similar amenities.
Premium Lounge Atlantico: This lounge is located in the transit zone, making it a good choice for those on an international layover in Lisbon.
Airport Business Center: Located on the Mezzanine Level above the Check-in desks. This is a suitable place for business travelers who need to work while waiting for their flight.

Transport to and from Lisbon Airport
Several transport options exist between the airport and the city. The most convenient and affordable is the Lisbon Metro.
The airport has a Metro station with a direct line (“Aeroporto – Saldanha”, also called “The Red Line”) to the city centre. The train to downtown Lisbon takes about 20 minutes. The one-way ticket costs just 1.80 EUR, making it a cheap and quick way to reach the city.
You can take the metro to Gare do Oriente to connect to the Portuguese rail network.
The alternative public transport option is the buses provided by Carris, which cover the Lisbon Metropolitan Area. They stop in front of Terminal 1 (all arriving flights land at T1).
Intercity buses by Flixbus also serve the airport, connecting it to farther destinations and other cities in Portugal and Spain.
For a more private trip, you can take a taxi outside the terminal. A trip to the city center typically costs between 10 and 15 EUR.
Ride-sharing platforms like Uber and Bolt have designated and signposted pick-up and drop-off locations. Prices are similar to taxis.
To reach Terminal 2 for your departure there (remember, no flights land at T2), you can either take a taxi/ride-sharing straight to it, or get to T1 in any way and take advantage of the free interterminal shuttle.

Parking at Humberto Delgado Airport
Lisbon Airport offers on-site parking in front of Terminal 1, whereas Terminal 2 has no such facilities.
The five Parking lots are numbered: P1, P2, P3, P5, and P6.
P1 and P2 are for short-term parking (the daily rate being 28 and 19.25 EUR respectively), while P3 is for longer stays with a daily rate of just 8 EUR.
If you’re just dropping off a passenger, you may enter the Kiss&Fly area and stay for free for up to 10 minutes. This applies to two non-sequential 10-minute slots within 24 hours. Longer stays quickly accrue high fees: 2 EUR for the first 15 minutes and 2 EUR for every 3 minutes thereafter, maxed at 100 EUR per day.
Hotels near Lisbon Airport
While there are no hotels within Terminal 1, a few are close enough to make for a convenient stay near Humberto Delgado Airport.
The Star Inn Lisbon Airport is a 3-star informal hotel within walking distance of Terminal 1. The rooms may lack glamor, but make up in utility. The breakfast buffet is pretty good.
An alternative is the Meliá Lisboa Aeroporto just across the road. It’s a more upscale hotel with more luxurious and spacious rooms, a spa center, a pool, and a sufficient breakfast.
A short drive from the airport is the Radisson Blu Hotel Lisbon, which also provides more high-class rooms and services.
