Newcastle International Airport (NCL) is the primary airport serving North East England, including Tyne and Wear, County Durham, and Northumberland, as well as parts of Cumbria and the Scottish Borders.
The airport is located about 8 miles northwest of Newcastle upon Tyne's city center, near the town of Woolsington. It offers direct flights to over 70 destinations across Europe, North Africa, North America, and the Middle East.
With just over 5 million passengers in 2024, Newcastle Airport ranks as the 11th busiest airport in the UK and the second busiest in Northern England, after Manchester Airport (MAN).
Major Airlines - Loganair, Jet2.com, Ryanair, easyJet
The airport serves as a hub for Loganair, the largest regional airline in the UK. It offers flights to domestic destinations such as Southampton and Exeter and some international like Stavanger and Bergen in Norway.
Newcastle is a focus city for several major airlines, including Jet2.com, Ryanair, TUI Airways, and easyJet. Together, these airlines offer over 50 different routes across Europe and beyond plus many seasonal flights to seaside and holiday destinations.
International airlines with a presence at Newcastle Airport include the Dutch KLM, the French Air France, and the Irish Aer Lingus.

Terminal Layout and Gates
Newcastle International Airport has a single, well-organized terminal. It is rather small and compact and moving from the check-in areas, through Security, and to the gates takes no more than 10 minutes.
Note that during the busy holiday season and the high summer months, there may be significantly more passengers at the airport, so arriving with time to spare is recommended.
The terminal is equipped with 26 gates located along a corridor.
Connecting Flights and Transit
Newcastle Airport is not a transfer airport and you cannot directly transfer within the airside area of the airport.
This means that to transfer between flights, you'll need to go through Immigration and Customs, re-check your luggage if you have any, and then check-in for your next flight and go through all checkpoints in reverse.
If you plan to transfer on your own, the absolute minimum between landing and the next flight’s departure should be 60 minutes in low season and 120 minutes in summer.

Wi-Fi at NCL
Complimentary Wi-Fi is available throughout the terminal of Newcastle Airport.
To connect to the free service select the network “_NCLFreeWiFi”.
A premium Wi-Fi network also exists. It is called “_NCLPremiumWiFi” and costs 5 GBP for an unlimited duration. The connection it provides is stronger, although unless you will be streaming or using a data-intensive application, you probably will do just fine on the free Wi-Fi.
Luggage Storage at NCL
There is a Luggage Storage facility located at the Oversized Baggage desk (before Security).
It is open 24/7 but contingent on available space and the size and weight of your luggage.
Luggage storage costs 8 GBP per piece of luggage per day.
Dining Options at Newcastle Airport
Newcastle Airport is small but that doesn’t mean you won’t find any cool places to eat and drink there.
On the contrary - it has its fair share of dining options including pubs, restaurants, and fast food kiosks.
Some of the places to choose from include:
Tap & Brew: A lively pub-style establishment serving a wide selection of craft beers with unobstructed views of the airfield.
Bar 11: A bar and dine-in restaurant that offers breakfast, all-day, and children’s menu, as well as vegetarian, plant-based, and non-gluten options.
Greggs: In the city where the popular UK bakery chain Greggs is headquartered it would be a sort of crime not to try one of its pastries or sandwiches.
Aster & Thyme: Delicious cocktails and regional produce with perhaps the best view at the airport.
Burger King: If you don’t have much time, a quick flame-grilled burger might do you just fine.
Starbucks: For premium coffee and various other drinks and snacks.
Soul + Grain: A fresh to-go outlet for vegans and vegetarians.
Upper Crust: They call themselves “The baguette specialists” and they are certainly correct.

Lounges
Newcastle Airport houses only 1 lounge: the Aspire Lounge.
It is split into 2 sections: The Standard section which is accessible to all passengers for a fee, and the Luxe Section open to premium passengers and specific program members.
The standard section is busier and livelier but through its better layout feels just as fine as the luxe section which is usually quieter and peaceful.
Both parts of the lounge offer complimentary food and beverages, Wi-Fi, and places for relaxation or work.
Transportation to and from Newcastle Airport
Several transportation options are available to reach Newcastle Airport from the city or to get to places in the surrounding region:
Metro: The airport is connected to the Tyne and Wear Metro system, with a station adjacent to the terminal. There are direct services to Newcastle city center (the trip takes about 25 minutes) and Sunderland (about 55 minutes away). The trains run from 5:30 AM (6:20 on Sundays) until midnight.
- Bus: Multiple bus routes link the airport to Newcastle and surrounding areas. The bus stop is located opposite the terminal.
Route 777 runs from Morpeth to Kingston Park stopping at Newcastle Airport.
Route 787 runs from Newcastle Newgate Street to the airport and back.
Routes X77, X78, and X79 run from Newcastle (Eldon Square) to Ponteland and stop on B6918 near the airport.
Note that these buses do not operate on Sundays.
Taxi: Licensed taxi services are available outside the terminal. The airport’s dedicated taxi company is Arrow Cars which has exclusive pick-up and drop-off locations right in front of the terminal. Book a taxi inside the main hall or at one of the self-service booking kiosks. A trip to the city costs around 50 GBP.
Ridesharing: Uber operates at Newcastle Airport. Follow the signs to its dedicated pick-up spots and then use the application to book a ride.
If traveling in your own vehicle, note that the principal North-South highway A1 passes quite close to Newcastle Airport. Alight to the dual carriageway A696 to reach the airport grounds.
At Newcastle Airport, you can also rent a car from one of the leading car rental companies in the world. Their manned desks are located on the ground floor opposite domestic arrivals and generally open between 7:30 AM and 10 PM.
You can also check out these private transfer options from Newcastle Airport.

Parking at Newcastle Airport
With two short-stay parking lots, one long-stay, and two premium car parks, there is never any shortage of parking space at Newcastle Airport.
Short Stay 1: Located just 2 minutes on foot from and directly opposite the terminal, this parking lot is ideal for brief stays and convenient for all durations.
Short Stay 2: A bit further than SS1 but not by much - just 3 minutes from the terminal building. Suitable for all durations though intended for short stays. There is a free 15-minute pick-up and drop-off period available in Short Stay 2. Prices in SS2 are a bit cheaper than in SS1.
Long Stay: It’s 10 minutes away from the terminal via a free coach shuttle. While available for all durations of stay, it offers better prices for longer stays.
Premium Fast Track: The car park closest to check-in. It also offers extra wide bays and a covered walkway to the terminal. Premium service for a premium price.
Premium Meet & Greet: Park immediately outside the terminal and let airport staff take care of the rest. When you return from your trip, proceed back to the customer service center just opposite Arrivals. A staff member will thereafter meet you with your keys outside.
Pre-book your parking spot to ensure availability and get better prices.
Hotels near Newcastle Airport
There are several hotels close to the airport. These two stand out for their recognizable brand names, proximity, and comfort.
DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Newcastle International Airport: It’s adjacent to the terminal and suitable for both leisure and business travelers.
Premier Inn Newcastle Airport: Located within walking distance of the airport on the other side of the B6918 road. It is a more budget-friendly accommodation option but with modern facilities nonetheless.
