Oslo Gardermoen Airport (OSL) - Norway's largest airport

Oslo Gardermoen Airport (OSL) is the busiest airport in Norway and one of the largest in the Nordic region. In this detailed guide, you will learn more about the way it's organized and the facilities it offers, including information about its airlines, terminals, dining options, parking & transportation, and nearby hotels.

Oslo Gardermoen Airport (OSL) is Norway’s largest and busiest airport and the main international and domestic gateway for the Oslo region and Eastern Norway.

The airport is located about 45 km north of central Oslo. The only other airport serving Oslo and the region, particularly for low-cost airlines, is TORP Sandefjord Airport (TRF).

In 2024, OSL handled more than 26 million passengers, making it the second-busiest airport in the Nordic region. From Gardermoen, you can catch a direct flight to over 30 domestic and more than 160 international destinations.

Major Airlines - Norwegian Air Shuttle, Scandinavian Airlines (SAS)

Oslo Gardermoen Airport is one of the three main hubs of Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), together with Copenhagen (CPH) and Stockholm (ARN). The airline flies over 2300 flights per month to more than 50 destinations.

However, SAS is not the largest airline at Oslo Airport, as the low-cost airline Norwegian Air Shuttle operates more than 3,000 flights per month to over 100 destinations. OSL is its largest operating base.

Other airlines that use OSL as an operating base include Norse Atlantic Airways and the regional Widerøe.

A range of major international and low-cost carriers also serve Oslo Airport. These include easyJet, Wizz Air, and Ryanair as the largest budget airlines, as well as Lufthansa, Air Baltic, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, and Iberia as some of the largest full-service carriers.

More than 35 airlines have scheduled flights at OSL. Click here to see a full list.

Terminal Layout and Gates

Oslo Airport has a single large terminal with a modular design. It is split into two wings and one pier, which have a total of 72 gates, 44 of which use bridges.

The west wing (A-gates) is for domestic flights, connecting to B-gates.

The north pier opened in 2017, includes the C-gates for domestic and D-gates for Schengen international travel, all on separate floors to manage flows.

The east pier handles international traffic, with E-gates for Schengen and F-gates for non-Schengen destinations.

Oslo is notably a silent airport. There are no general boarding calls broadcast to reduce noise. Information is delivered only at the gate.

As all gates are within the same building, there is no need for transport between any of them.

Connecting Flights and Transit

Oslo Gardermoen Airport has a compact, single-terminal design, so transfers between flights are quite easy.

Gate areas are color-coded and segmented into domestic, Schengen, and non-Schengen areas. Connecting from one gate type to another can require a moderate walk, up to 10-15 minutes at a relaxed pace.

For domestic-to-domestic connections, the procedure is standard.

However, Oslo is an odd outlier of an airport when it comes to international-to-domestic and international-to-international connections. It follows a procedure similar to US airports, where you must clear Immigration, collect your luggage, re-check it for your next flight, and re-enter the airside area. This applies if traveling with just hand luggage, too!

Some airlines are an exception to the rule above. If you have a domestic transfer (coming in from outside Norway and proceeding on a domestic flight) with any of the airlines below and flying on the same ticket reservation (same PNR, through-checked ticket), then you can proceed to your new gate without clearing Immigration, Security, and re-checking your luggage:

Part of the Domestic Transfer Solution are: Air Baltic, Air France, Atlantic Airways, Emirates, LOT Polish Airlines, Norwegian, SAS, KLM, and Widerøe.

Luggage Storage at OSL

At Parking Lot 10, you’ll find 200 lockers available 24 hours.

Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the airport.

The network has the SSID "AIRPORT" and is very easy to connect to. No registration needed.

The session limit is 4 hours, but you can just reconnect if you need to use it for longer.

Lounges offer their own Wi-Fi networks.

Lounges at Oslo Gardermoen

  • OSL Lounge by SSP Domestic: available to premium domestic passengers and anyone else for a fee, depending on the time until your flight. Certain credit card holders may be eligible to enter for free.

  • OSL Lounge by SSP International, which can be used by all travellers for NOK 445 for up to 3 hours. It also has a Premium section for some airlines with special agreements.

Lounges normally offer recliners or workstations, snacks, drinks, buffet service, flight info displays, and charging stations, and sometimes showers.

Dining Options at OSL

OSL offers ample retail and dining outlets. The terminal includes more than 20 restaurants and cafés, all of which are located after Security (airside).

In the Domestic area of the terminal, you can find fast food and snacks in the form of pastries, sandwiches, and burgers from establishments such as BIT, Crafts (near Gate A8), Northland (near Gate A12), O’Learys (near Gate A2), and PiqNiq (near Gate A20).

The go-to places for coffee if flying domestically are Kaffetår (near Gate C2) and Ritazza (near Gate C1).

For sit-down restaurants with a wide selection of meals, check out Lett near Gate A6 and Trattoria Tavolare near Gate A2.

In the International area of OSL, you will find many of the same chains. Lett, O’Learys, Northland, BIT, and Trattoria Tavolare have outlets in different areas of the terminal. In addition, it’s worth checking out Asia Street Cooking near Gate E2 for cuisine from the East, Tigerstaden for a drink in a bar setting, and Parken Utland for coffee.

WHSmith operates two kiosks-minimarkets near Gates D1 and D6.

Oslo Gardermoen has one of the largest duty free areas in Europe.

Transportation between Gardermoen Airport and Oslo

The easiest way to travel between the airport and the city is the Airport Express Train (Flytoget). It stops at Oslo Airport, Drammen, Asker, Sandvika, Lysaker, Skøyen, Nationaltheatret, Oslo S, and Lillestrøm. Adult tickets (OSL to Oslo) cost 252 NOK with departures every 10-20 minutes on average. The journey takes about 20 minutes.

Another option is the regular Vy regional trains, which are slightly slower (but not by much) and cheaper, but run less frequently.

The Airport Express Coach (Flybussen) is the main bus option. A single ticket costs 259 NOK, and the journey takes 70 minutes, making it a worse deal than the train.

Several other buses and coaches, such as Ruter, NOR-WAY bus Airport Coach, Vy Flybussen, and OSL Ekspressen, also connect OSL with nearby cities.

Taxis and ride-hail are available, though relatively expensive given Norway’s cost of living and distance to the city center. To call one, use the taxi booking machine on the ground level, outside the terminal building, near the taxi pick-up location itself. A trip to the city will take around 30 minutes and may cost as much as 1000 NOK.

The Flytoget train makes to journey from OSL to the city in under 20 minutes!

Parking at Oslo Airport

OSL offers several parking lots for both short-term and long-term, around the terminal.

Parking lots P0, P1, P2, P8, P10, and P11 are within walking distance of the terminal, while P2, P3, P4, P5, and P6 are a bit further, but free shuttle buses run continuously throughout the day from platforms 9 and 10, connecting all parking areas to the terminal.

Parking rates are as follows:

  • NOK 40 for every 20 minutes.

  • NOK 800 for 24 hours.

You can pre-book on the official website to receive better rates.

Parking for electric vehicles is available in all parking lots. Charging stations are reserved for EVs. Charging is charged at 5-6 NOK per kWh in addition to the parking fees.

Lastly, short stays within the airport grounds are best done via the Kiss&Fly system. Every car that drives in front of the terminal building is registered automatically. Stays of less than 7 minutes are free, but a charge of 70 NOK per 20 minutes is imposed thereafter.

Hotels near Oslo Airport

There’s no hotel inside the terminal, but several airport-adjacent hotels that offer shuttle services are available nearby:

  • Radisson Blu Airport Hotel: a classic and elegant hotel.

  • Radisson Hotel & Conference Centre: a hotel with conference facilities and a wonderful restaurant.

  • Radisson RED: A more modern and urban airport hotel of the same chain.

Other hotels that can safely be called airport hotels are located on both sides of the E16 on the west side of OSL and near the Gardermoen Business Park on the east side.
