Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) - the second-busiest in Pennsylvania

Pittsburgh Airport (PIT) serves the Greater Pittsburgh Region as Pennsylvania's second-busiest airport. In this guide, you will learn all about the airport's terminals, airlines, lounges, restaurants, transportation and parking options, and nearby hotels.

Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) is the primary international airport serving the Greater Pittsburgh Region and nearby areas in West Virginia and Ohio.

The airport is located in western Pennsylvania in Allegheny County (Findlay Township and Moon Township), about 16 miles (~26 km) west of downtown Pittsburgh.

In 2024, PIT handled nearly 10 million passengers, marking its highest annual traffic in nearly two decades and surpassing its pre-pandemic level. This ranks it among the 50 busiest airports in the USA.

In 2025, the airport completed its major terminal modernization project of around US$1.7 billion. Some renovations are still ongoing.

Major Airlines - Southwest Airlines, Southern Airways Express

PIT has not been a major hub even since US Airways (now merged with American Airlines) pulled out of the airport as a hub in 2004. Still, Pittsburgh Airport serves many carriers, including the major US carriers.

Southwest Airlines captures the largest share of the market at PIT, flying more than a quarter of all passengers using the airport. With its 20+ destinations, it is also the airline with the most extensive network.

Southwest Airport serves the most passengers at PIT.

Pittsburgh Airport is a hub for the small commuter airline Southern Airways Express. It provides frequent flights to less-served airports in Pennsylvania.

American, Delta, and United all fly to Pittsburgh from their hubs throughout the US. The 3 largest US carriers operate some of the flights by their regional subsidiaries, American Eagle, Delta Connection, and United Express, respectively.

Allegiant Air, Breeze Airways, Frontier, JetBlue, Spirit, and Sun Country Airlines serve the low-cost sector.

Foreign carriers with direct flights to PIT include Air Canada Express, British Airways, and Icelandair.

In total, PIT receives flights from around 15 airlines and offers nonstop service to more than 60 destinations.

Terminal Layout and Gates

The airport comprises a Landside Terminal (ticketing, check-in, arrivals) and an Airside Terminal (departure gates) connected by a people-mover system.

The Airside Terminal of Pittsburgh Airport.

Four concourses branch from the Airside Terminal (which is sometimes called the Central Concourse):

  • Concourse A with 25 gates.

  • Concourse B with 25 gates.

  • Concourse C with 11 gates. Handles international flights by British Airways and Air Canada. Has no restaurants or bars.

  • Concourse D with 14 gates.

Most retail and dining facilities, including an AirMall and several lounges, are within the Central Concourse.

Concourse B.

The concourses are in an X pattern around the Airside Terminal, so walking between two gates in different concourses requires that you pass through the central areas. Still, the terminal is relatively small, and the two furthest gates are just 0.6 miles from each other. Concourses have moving walkways, too, to speed up getting to your gate.

Pittsburgh Airport has 2 security checkpoints:

  • The Main Checkpoint is located on level 2 and is in operation 24/7.

  • The smaller alternate checkpoint is on level 3 and is only utilized when demand is high, usually between 5 AM and 6 PM.

Free WiFi at PIT

Free WiFi is provided throughout the terminals. The network is open and anyone can connect without the need of a password or registration. You may need to open your browser to complete the connection if it doesn’t open automatically.

Dining Options at Pittsburgh Airport

PIT offers a variety of retail and dining outlets through its “AirMall” in the Airside Terminal as well as landside shops. Individual concourses have fewer places, though Concourse A and Concourse B offer sufficient options.

The offerings include international brand stores, local Pittsburgh-inspired products, cafés, quick service, and sit-down restaurants.

Some of the favorite places of frequent travelers include:

  • Buford's Kitchen: Serves burgers, Southern specialties, and other food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Located Landside, near the TSA Main checkpoint.

  • Bellfarm Kitchen: Offers a contemporary, upscale dining experience. Located on the lobby level of the Hyatt Regency Hotel (landside).

  • Burgh Sportz Bar: A classic pub with beer on tap. Find it near Gate B1 and near Gate D2.

  • Marathon Diner: Serves Mediterranean cuisine, all-day breakfast, and quick foods like burgers, gyros, sandwiches, salads, etc. Lcoated near Concourses A & D.

  • TGI Friday's Pub: The famous pub chain welcomes all PIT passengers with signature cocktails, craft beers, and other drinks near Gate D3.

If you’re looking for something on the go, check out Auntie Anne’s, Cinnabon, Shake Shack, Chick-fil-a, The Strip Market, Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches, or one of the Farmer's Fridges, all located airside throughout the concourses.

Coffee you can get from Starbucks, Joe & The Juice, Dunkin’ Donuts, and Café Conmigo, among other places.

Lounges at PIT

Three lounges are present at Pittsburgh Airport, two of which accept all travelers who purchase a day pass or have premium status, and one, which serves members of the military.

Of the major airlines at PIT, only American Airlines maintains a lounge. Its Admirals Club is located on level 4 of the Central Concourse. The lounge’s opening times are roughly from 5 AM (except on Sundays when it opens at 1:30 PM) until 8:00-9:30 PM. A day pass costs $79 for those who are not eligible to receive a complimentary entry.

The Club Pittsburgh is a VIP lounge at the entrance to Concourse C, which welcomes all travelers for a day pass of $50. It’s open from 4:30 AM to 8 PM, except on Saturdays when it closes half an hour earlier, at 7:30 PM.

Lastly, the USO Lounge, available only to active military members and their families, is located near Gate 54 in Concourse C. It’s open daily, from 9 AM to 5 PM.

Transportation options to and from PIT

PIT is served by Interstate 376 (Exit 53) for road access. The driving distance to downtown Pittsburgh is around 19 miles, taking roughly 25-30 minutes. Erie and Cleveland are both around 2 hours away.

You can pay cash on the bus (no change given), whereas credit cards are accepted at the ticket machine near the bus stop at Door 2. Day passes are also sold for $7.

The Fullington Bus connects the airport to the Greyhound station in Pittsburgh, Indiana University of PA, and to Penn State’s main campus. It has just 1 departure per day - at 2:50 PM. Pick-up is outside of Door #2 on the first floor in the Baggage Claim area.

Parking at Pittsburgh Airport

PIT offers multiple parking options for short-term and long-term, as well as economy options.

Premium parking is offered in designated, covered spaces closest to the terminal. You must reserve this in advance. Costs $49 per day or $499 per month.

Short-term parking is available in the garage next to the terminal. You can easily walk between the terminal and the parking garage in less than 5 minutes. The parking charges are $4 for the first 15 minutes, $10 for the first hour, with discounts for stays longer than that and a daily maximum of $36.

Long-term parking is just a little farther from the terminal. Using a moving walkway, you can reach the parking in less than 10 minutes. The first 15 minutes cost $2, whereas the first hour of parking is charged $8. The daily cap is $20.

You can find more parking spaces in the Extended Parking Lot, southwest of the terminal. It is served by a shuttle - request it by pushing the call button at the bus shelters (from the airport, the shuttles depart from Door 6 in front of Arrivals). This is the only lot with a gratis period - the first 1 hour of parking here is free. Thereafter, the hourly charge is $5, and the daily maximum is just $15.

The cheapest option is the Economy Parking, about a 15-minute walk from the terminal. Note that this lot is not served by a shuttle. The daily rate is $13.
