Billund Airport (BLL) - Denmark's second-busiest airport

Billund Airport is the second-busiest airport in Denmark and the closest one to the famous Legoland amusement park. In this detailed guide, you can find more information about the airport's terminal, airlines, lounges, dining options, transportation, parking, nearby hotels, and other services.

Billund Airport (BLL) serves much of western Denmark and parts of southern Jutland. It is located 3 km north of the town of Billund, 28 km from Vejle, 30 km from Kolding, and roughly 100 km from Aarhus.

Despite its relatively rural location, it handles more than 3 million passengers annually, which makes it Denmark's second-busiest airport after Copenhagen (CPH).

The main reason for that is the LEGOLAND Billund Resort and the LEGO House. They are both located in Billund and attract millions yearly, making Billund Airport extremely convenient for visiting them. Add to this the several low-cost carriers that operate at the airport, and the result is that Billund is one of the most popular non-seaside leisure destinations in Northern Europe.

Legoland, a popular amusement park, is just 1.5 km from Billund Airport.

Major Airlines - Norwegian Air Shuttle, Wizz Air

Billund Airport has long been popular with low-cost carriers. After Ryanair withdrew from the airport in 2025, Norwegian Air Shuttle launched more than 10 new routes, becoming the largest airline at BLL. While most destinations are served only seasonally, a few flights operate year-round, most notably to London-Gatwick and Oslo.

The other LCC with many flights to and from Billund is Wizz Air. It offers frequent flights to cities in Eastern Europe, especially in Poland, Romania, and Hungary.

Scandinavian Airlines, the official flag carrier of Denmark (along with Sweden and Norway), flies between Billund and its three hubs in Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Oslo.

Of the full-service national carriers to fly to BLL, notable ones are Air France, Lufthansa, KLM, British Airways, and LOT Polish Airlines.

Terminal Layout and Gates

Billund Airport has one terminal (sometimes called “New Terminal”) spread over 3 floors:

  • Check-in and self-service baggage drop-off area on the ground floor. On the right-hand side is Security, while the Arrivals Hall is on the left.

  • Departures, stores, most dining options, and lounges are on the first floor.

The longest you may have to walk is still under 5 minutes. For Schengen flights, given the efficiency, arriving at the airport even just 30 minutes is enough time to make your flight.

There are a total of 16 gates.

Free Wi-Fi and other services

Billund Airport provides free Wi-Fi throughout the terminal. To connect, use the “FREEinternetBLL” network. There are no bandwidth or duration limits.

Other passenger services at BLL include:

  • ATMs: There is at least 1 cash machine for both Danish Krones and euros, though it may charge high fees. Note that it’s possible to use a card to pay for nearly everything in Denmark.

  • Currency exchange: Global Exchange has offices in the Check-in area, in Departures, and in Arrivals.

  • Lost & Found: The office is open every day from 10 AM to 2 PM.

  • Luggage storage: There are luggage lockers in car park P2. Standard lockers cost DKK 94 DKK per 24 hours, while large ones cost 169 DKK per 24 hours.

  • Massage chairs: Available after Security, near the WHSmith shop. Cost 20 DKK for a short massage.

  • Smoking cabin: The only place where you are allowed to smoke inside the terminal is the smoking cabin in the waiting area behind WHSmith on the way to the gates.

Lounges at BLL

Billund has only one lounge - the well-equipped King Amlet Lounge. To reach it, keep right after the cosmetics area in Departures, walk past the WHSmith store, and go up the stairs or take the elevator to the lounge.

It opens every day at 4:30 AM and closes around 10 PM, except on Tuesdays (6:45 PM), Thursdays (9:15 PM), and Saturdays (8 PM).

To enter, you may use Priority Pass, LoungeKey, or DragonPass. Holding a business or first-class ticket with most full-service airlines also makes you eligible for a free entry. Other than that, anyone can enter by paying 225 DKK for a 2-hour pass or 300 DKK for a 3-hour pass (plus 50 DKK for each additional hour).

SAS flies between Billund and Oslo and Stockholm.

King Amlet Lounge offers hot meals, soups, salads, Danish beers, wine, coffee, soft drinks, newspapers, workstations, a shielded business zone, and seats overlooking the apron.

Dining Options at Billund Airport

There are four notable places for eating or quick snacking at BLL:

  • Café Square: Located by the terminal entrance (thus landside), this is the place to buy coffee or breakfast in the morning, or to try the Norwegian specialty“stjerneskud” (steamed fish on bread).

  • Gastro: Offers great food such as steak frites, Caesar salad, and fish & chips, and a bar with a large range of beers in a laid-back setting with views of the runway.

  • Lagkagehuset: The best option for grab&go. Sells barista coffee, breakfast, sweet and savory pastries, and sandwiches.

  • Sunset Boulevard: With a large area of over 250 seats, this is the most popular spot at Billund Airport. It is a popular fast food chain in Denmark with a focus on burgers and sides.

Transport to and from the airport

Billund Airport is quite close to the city and to the biggest attraction nearby, Legoland, just about 3 kilometers.

To reach Billund during the summer, you may use the free shuttle bus, which runs throughout the day, from 2 hours before the first flight to 1 hour after the last arrival. This bus also stops right in front of Legoland.

Outside the summer season (July 1st to August 31st), you may take any of these buses to reach Billund or Legoland: 43, 119, 143, 144, 944X, 166. Tickets cost 26 DKK, with the last bus from the airport at 11:15 PM.

Several public bus lines stop at Billund Airport, connecting it to nearby cities.

Throughout the year, you can directly reach many cities in Denmark from BLL, for example:

  • Esbjerg: by Bus Route 144 or 944X. Tickets cost 84 DKK.

  • Aarhus: by Bus Route 912X. Stops at Horsens and Skanderborg on the way. Costs 155 DKK. It’s the only line operated by Midttrafik, as all others are operated by Sydtrafik.

  • Give-Tørring: by Bus Route 119.

  • Kolding: By Bus Route 166.

Taxis are, of course, an option, and you will always be able to hail a taxi in front of arrivals. However, they are relatively expensive - the short 8-minute drive to the city costs around 150 DKK.

Alternatives to traditional taxis are ride-hailing platforms such as Uber and Bolt, as well as peer-to-peer carpooling options like GoMore, which has a dedicated pick-up location at the airport.

Rental cars are popular in Denmark and will allow you to more easily explore more of the country and the North Sea coast. Car rental prices start at 18 EUR per day and are offered by the world’s largest providers - Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Europcar, Hertz, and Sixt.

About just 3 minutes from the terminal is Airport Hotel Billund. It’s a 3-star hotel and is the perfect choice for a place to stay before an early flight.

Another excellent nearby option is Hotel LEGOLAND, especially if you’re visiting LEGOLAND. It’s about 1.5 km away from the terminal, making walking viable, although nearly all public buses also stop there, and a taxi ride won’t cost all that much.
