Kansai International Airport (KIX) is the third-busiest airport in Japan and serves the country’s second-largest city, Osaka.
The airport is located on an artificial island, called Kankūjima, in Osaka Bay, about 40 km southwest of central Osaka. KIX is the closest international airport to the former Japanese capitals of Kyoto, Nara, and Kobe, and the largest airport in Western Japan.
Kansai is also the primary international airport for the Keihanshin agglomeration, in contrast with Osaka Itami Airport (ITM), which handles only domestic flights.
Osaka Kansai Airport handled more than 34 million passengers. It is one of Japan’s main long-haul international gateways and one of the 40 busiest airports in Asia.
Major Airlines - ANA, JAL, Peach
The two largest Japanese carriers both have hubs at Osaka Kansai:
All Nippon Airways (ANA): Operates more than 500 flights per month to 7 destinations in Japan and abroad.
Japan Airlines (JAL): Also flies domestically and to select destinations in Thailand, China, Taiwan, and Hawaii.
The low-cost carrier, Peach Aviation, also stands out for its major base at KIX. It offers the most destinations and is the main airline using Terminal 2, together with Spring Airlines and Jeju Air. Other low-budget carriers, such as Jetstar, VietJet, AirAsia, and T’way Air, use Terminal 1.
Prominent full-service airlines that fly to Osaka include Air Canada, Air China, Air France, Emirates, Etihad Airways, KLM, Korean Air, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Turkish Airlines, United Airlines, and others.
The airport offers extensive connections across East Asia (Seoul, Taipei, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Macau, etc.), Southeast Asia, Australia, and several long-haul routes to Europe and North America.

Terminal Layout and Gates
Osaka Kansai Airport has two passenger terminals:
Terminal 1: The main international and full-service terminal. It is the longest terminal building in the world at 1.7 km. It has a central check-in hall from where the 42 gates extend along a single pier. You may have to walk a lot to reach your gate, especially if it’s one of the last ones, but there are moving walkways to assist. The Immigration check to separate domestic from international flights is after Airport Security.
Terminal 2 is the low-cost terminal and is currently utilized by only three airlines, most prominently Peach Aviation. In line with its low-cost status, it is a simple facility with only one level, uses bus/walk boarding to reach the 21 gates, and fewer services.
The two terminals are not directly connected. Instead, a free shuttle bus connects them, the railway, and the ferry stations. The shuttle bus has a frequency of 3-6 minutes during the day and a travel time of just 7 minutes.
It is also possible to walk between them via the KIX Sora Park, though note that the distance is around 2.4 km.
Connecting Flights and Transit
KIX is not a developed transfer hub like Tokyo Narita or Haneda. Most passengers have Osaka either as their origin or destination, not as a layover airport.
Nevertheless, you can indeed transit through Osaka Kansai Airport. The exact procedure depends on whether your flights are domestic or international and the airline serving them.
Domestic-to-domestic, same terminal: Follow the “Transit” signs, and proceed to your new gate on foot. If transiting at T1, you have to go up one level. If transiting at T2 (most likely with Peach), you may have to re-check your luggage. There is no Security check. The average transit time is around 20 minutes.
Domestic-to-domestic, different terminal: Use the free shuttle to move between terminals. Then, go to Departures and find your new gate. You have to go through Security again. The average transit time is around 40 minutes
International-to-domestic: Follow the signs for “Arrival/Immigration”. Go through the Immigration and Customs check. If your next flight is from a different terminal, take the interterminal shuttle. You may have to recheck your luggage. Then, proceed to Departures and find your new gate. The average transit time is 50-70 minutes.
Domestic-to-international: Follow signs to exit the transit area. If your next flight is from a different terminal, take the interterminal shuttle. Then, follow the signs for Immigration. After you go through the Immigration control, find your new gate. The average transit time is 50-70 minutes.
International-to-international: Upon arrival, follow the signs to “Connecting Flights”. You will have to go through a transit security checkpoint, but there is no Immigration control. You can remain within the transit area of Osaka Airport until your next flight. The average transit time is 25 minutes. This type of transit is only possible at Terminal 1. All international arrivals at Terminal 2 are treated as independent flights, so they need to go through Immigration before continuing to their next flight.
Always check with the airline whether your luggage will be checked through to your final destination. If not, allow extra time to retrieve and recheck it yourself.
Free Wi-Fi and other services
Free Wi-Fi is available in all public areas of both terminals, the bus station at T1, the railway station, the Aeroplaza, and the Sky View Observation Hall. Connect to the network “_FreeWiFi-KansaiAirports” or “ _FreeWiFi-KansaiAirports2.4G” and follow the simple registration procedures.
In addition, there are also WiFiBOX vending machines, portable hotspot vending machines, SIM card vending machines, and mobile phone vending machines in Terminal 1.
Battery and PC desks are spread throughout the terminals, both landside and airside.
Other passenger services at KIX include:
ATMs: Four machines available in T2, one in the Aeroplaza, and 13 machines in T1.
Currency exchange: Several desks available in T1, including automated currency changing machines that accept the world’s biggest currencies. T2 also has one physical desk and two automatic machines available.
Bank: MUFG Bank is the only one available. Located in T1, 2F.
Luggage forwarding counters: Popular in Japan for shipping bags to/from your hotel.
Luggage storage: Temporary storage facilities for carry-on baggage at the northern and southern ends of Terminal 1, 1F and 4F. There are also coin-operated lockers in Terminal 1, Terminal 2, and the Aeroplaza. Price to rent is per day: 400 JPY for small items, 600 JPY for medium, and 800 JPY for large.
Baggage wrapping service in the check-in areas.
Kids’ play areas in both terminals.
Baby rooms in both terminals and the Aeroplaza. They include diaper changing tables, baby chairs, and nursing areas.
Post boxes: in several places in T1 and T2.
Porter Service: Only available in T1 for 530 JPY. Requires a prior reservation.
Smoking areas: Only allowed in designated areas. Rooms for smokers are located on 2F and 3F of the Aeroplaza, in several places in T1, and in T2.
Pet Hotel: Located in Terminal 1, 3F, before security.
Prayer rooms: A non-denominational, free-access prayer room is available in T1, 3F, in the international gate area.
Umbrella reuse service: You can leave the umbrella you don’t need anymore or pick one up for free at the umbrella station in T1, 2F, before Security.
Information desks in both terminals, including tourist information.
Observation Hall: Can be reached via the free interterminal shuttle bus. Open from 10 AM to 5 PM.
- Medical services:
Doctor’s Clinic in T1, 2F. Open from 9 AM to 5 PM.
Dental Clinic in the Aeroplaza, 3F. Open from 10:30 AM to 7 PM all days except Thursday, Sunday, and public holidays.
Automated External Defibrillator (AED): In several places throughout the terminals and the Aeroplaza.
Paid waiting room: Three such rooms are available to rent with rates starting at 25.000 JPY per hour (2 hours minimum), depending on the size of the room.
Copy services: Available in most convenience stores within the airport.
Photo Booths: Two coin-operated booths on 1F and 2F in T1, before Security.
Concierge and Meet & Greet services: Requires prior reservation. Priced at 88.000 JPY + 22.000 JPY for additional people for a departure escort and 66.000 JPY + 16.500 JPY for additional people for an arrival escort.
Lounges at KIX
Only Terminal 1 of KIX has lounges - Terminal 2, owing to its low-cost status, houses none. The available lounges in T1 can be categorized by who operates them and the way they accept guests.
Airline lounges by specific airlines like ANA or Korean Air have all permanently closed in recent years. Business and first-class passengers of these (and other) airlines can use one of three dedicated lounges managed by the airport:
KIX Lounge Premium: Located in the International gates area. Open from 6:30 AM to 00:30 AM. It has a capacity of 143 seats and features restrooms, shower rooms, smoking rooms, private rooms, massage chairs, lockers, a staffed bar, and a buffet of food and beverages.
KIX Lounge Kansai: A much bigger lounge, also located in the International gates area. Open from 6:30 AM to 00:55 AM or to coincide with the Security checkpoint opening and the last departure. Includes similar amenities as the other lounge, just much larger.
Lounge KANSAI: A lounge dedicated to domestic passengers. Located on the third floor, after Security, in the Domestic area. Open from 5:30 AM until the last departure for the day.
Holders of certain credit cards, including JCB, Rakuten, Saison, DC, Diners Club, and others, have access to four other credit card lounges, which also accept lounge passes by membership programs such as Priority Pass, Dragon Pass, and LoungeKey:
Cardmember lounge "Rokko": Located in the North Wing (International), in front of Gate 12. Open from 8:30 AM to 9 PM.
Cardmember lounge "Annex Rokko": Located in the North Wing (International), next to the intermediate station of the shuttle. Open from 7:30 AM to 10 PM.
Cardmember lounge "Kanku": Located in the South Wing (International), in front of Gate 29. Open from 8 AM to 10 PM.
KIX Airport Café Lounge NODOKA: Located on the second floor of the Aeroplaza, landside (public area). It’s open 24/7. Entry is free for up to 2 hours to eligible cardholders, but the lounge is also accessible to everyone else for 2400/3000 JPY (open seats/private seats) for the first 3 hours. You can also use just the shower facilities for 1400 JPY per person, with toiletries provided.
Lastly, an Airside Lounge, on the third floor, after Security, in the International area, is available for members only.
Dining Options at Osaka Kansai Airport
Osaka Airport is one of the best airports in the world when it comes to options for places to eat.
The pre-security “Aeroplaza” area has restaurants like Nakau and Hanazato (both traditional cuisine), bars such as Il Bar, fine dining at The Brasserie and Olive Hill, fast food joints like Zetteria, as well as convenience stores.
Terminal 1 has a wide array of restaurants, bars, coffee shops, and convenience stores, both landside and airside.
You can easily find Japanese favorites like ramen, sushi, curry, okonomiyaki, soba, and others. For example:
Kineya Mugimaru: Homemade Japanese food before Security, 2F.
Osaka Tenma Sushi Nishiya: Traditional sushi before Security, 2F.
Tsukiji Magoemon: Traditional sushi after Security, 2F.
Tonkatsu Wako Keitei: Typical Japanese mix of rice and fried chicken. Located before Security, 2F.
Boteyju®1946: A varied menu, including all Osaka specialties like okonomiyaki and kushikatsu.
Nana’s Green Tea: For drinks and ice cream. After Security, the International area.
Pronto: Coffee, cocktails, and quick meals. Before Security.
Sorateria: A restaurant in the Domestic area after Security.
Coco’s Airport Dining: Serves both Japanese and Western cuisine before Security.
Most places open in line with the early morning departures from KIX and close around 10-11 PM. Only McDonald’s (T1, before Security) is open 24/7.
Transport from the airport
The main mode of transport for most visitors is via rail. KIX has an airport station directly connected to Terminal 1.
Two train companies have services at it:
JR Haruka Express: Direct services to Tennoji, Osaka Sta., Shin-Osaka, Kyoto, etc. Rapid trains to Tennoji Station cost 1080 JPY.
Nankai Airport Express / Rapi:t: Direct trains to Namba and Shin-Imamiya in central Osaka with tickets starting at 970 JPY.
Transportation in Osaka and Japan in general can be confusing, but there are information desks near the train station, ready to help you orient and plan your route, and buy tickets.
You can buy tickets from the vending machines in cash only or inside the ticket office in cash or by card. ICOCA and SUICA cards can be purchased at vending machines, too - they make paying for public transport in Japan a breeze.
Travel time to the city center of Osaka is around 35-45 minutes, depending on which service you take and the destination. Namba and Shin-Osaka Stations offer connections to pretty much anywhere in Japan.
At Osaka Airport, there are also limousine buses. Since they are more expensive and slower than trains, they only make sense if they stop near your destination without the need to change transport. Universal Studios, Kobe, and Nara are suitable destinations for taking a bus over a combination of trains.
The airport is on an artificial island and has its own ferry station. High-speed ferries connect to Kobe Airport on the other side of Osaka Bay between 5:30 AM and 11:50 PM with one-way tickets costing 1880 JPY.
Taxis and Uber are available but expensive due to the long distance to central Osaka. Fares to the city center are around 20.000-23.000 JPY. A taxi to Kyoto will set you back around 39.000 JPY.
You may also consider renting a car for your trip to Japan. Five companies have desks in KIX, Nippon Rent-A-Car, Nissan Rent-A-Car, Toyota Rent-A-Car, Oryx Rent-A-Car Japan, and Timer CAR, all in the Aeroplaza on 1F or 2F. Note that Japan recognizes only the international driving licenses issued in accordance with the 1949 Geneva Convention. Weekly rentals cost around 65.000 JPY with same-day return deals available too.
Parking at Osaka Kansai Airport
Those wishing to park at the airport can do so in four Vertical Parking Areas near Terminal 1 and two more near Terminal 2.
Parking fees are around 30% higher during peak periods. All garages can be used for both short-term and long-term parking.
Terminal 1 parking options are (all prices are for off-peak periods):
P1 and P2: 220 JPY per 30 minutes. Daily maximum of 3080 JPY for the first day and 1980 JPY for additional days. This drops to 1320 JPY per day after the first week.
P3 and P4: 180 JPY per 30 minutes. Daily maximum of 2520 JPY for the first day and 1620 JPY for additional days. This drops to 1080 JPY per day after the first week.
Terminal 2 parking options are (all prices are for off-peak periods):
P5: 200 JPY per 30 minutes. Daily maximum of 2800 JPY for the first day and 1800 JPY for additional days. This drops to 1200 JPY per day after the first week.
P6: 180 JPY per 30 minutes. Daily maximum of 2520 JPY for the first day and 1620 JPY for additional days. This drops to 1080 JPY per day after the first week.
Motorcycle parking is only available in P1, near Terminal 1, where it costs 100 JPY per 30 minutes. Daily maximum of 1400 JPY for the first day and 900 JPY for additional days. This drops to 600 JPY per day after the first week.
There is no parking for motorcycles near Terminal 2.
You can park at any of the garages without a reservation, but booking is recommended during peak periods. Congestion levels are displayed on the airport’s parking information page.
Hotels near Osaka Airport
The most convenient option is the Hotel Nikko Kansai Airport - a 4-star hotel directly connected to Terminal 1 and the railway station (under 5 minutes of walking). It is ideal for early departures or late arrivals for its unbeatable proximity. Note that the hotel is landside. It also offers several on-site restaurants.
A more budget-friendly option is FIRST CABIN Kansai Airport - a capsule-style accommodation with a shared large communal bath and lounge. It’s inside the Aeroplaza complex.
While those are the only two options within the airport (as well as on the airport island), there are dozens of other hotels for all budgets in Rinku Town, just across the bridge that connects it to the airport.
