Major Airlines - Wideroe, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Scandinavian Airlines

Most flights at Trondheim are domestic.

Widerøe is the domestic airline serving the most destinations. Most are smaller communities throughout central and northern Norway, though the airline also flies to Bergen, Tromsø, and seasonally to Oslo.

Widerøe often uses smaller planes for its regional services.

Norwegian Air Shuttle, the dominant low-cost airline in the Nordics, is another major carrier at TRD. It serves the two largest cities in Norway, Oslo and Bergen, offers direct flights to select European destinations such as London and Kraków year-round, and offers seasonal charters to popular holiday destinations in Spain, Greece, and elsewhere.

Norwegian Air Shuttle - the largest low-cost airline in Norway.

Scandinavian Airlines, the joint flag carrier of Norway, Denmark, and Sweden, also treats Trondheim as a focus city. It offers frequent domestic flights to Oslo, Bergen, Stavanger, Tromsø, and Bodø, as well as international flights to its hubs in Stockholm and Copenhagen.

Few foreign airlines serve TRD. Notably, Lufthansa flies to Frankfurt and Munich, while KLM flies 2-3 times daily to Amsterdam. Wizz Air flies to Gdańsk in Poland.

During the summer, several leisure airlines start offering flights to Norwegian holidaymakers who want to go to warmer seaside resorts. The largest is Sunclass Airlines.

Terminal Layout and Gates

Trondheim Airport has just one terminal building, although it’s sometimes considered split into two - Terminal A and Terminal B.

Technically, nearly all facilities are within the main area of the building, collectively called Terminal A. This includes check-in for all flights on the second floor, stores, dining places, and other passenger services. Terminal A also handles all domestic flights. Gates within Terminal A are numbered 25 to 37.

Terminal B handles all international traffic. It is within the same building. To reach it, you must walk through the entirety of Terminal A (the domestic flights section), then down the stairs after Customs, which will bring you to the Duty Free area for all departing and arriving passengers. For non-Schengen flights, there is an additional passport control at the far end of the terminal. Note that facilities after this check are barebones, so it’s better to wait in the common area until closer to flight time. Gates within Terminal B are numbered 42 to 49.

Trondheim Airport is somewhat of a small domestic/regional hub, especially for flights connecting the southern and northern parts of the country.

Widerøe, in particular, has many routes that go through Værnes, so you may end up transferring at TRD. Since the terminal is very compact and you won’t have to walk more than 5 minutes between areas, connections are generally quite easy. There are plenty of signs to follow and not lose your way around the airport.

The airport is open 24/7.

Free Wi-Fi and other services

Trondheim Airport provides free Wi-Fi in all public areas of the terminal. To connect, select the “AIRPORT” network, then open your browser and click “Free”.

You will need to log in, after which you will be online. The connection is valid for 4 hours, but if you need to use it for longer, you can just reconnect. You can also purchase connections with higher speeds on the network’s welcome page.

Other passenger services at TRD include:

  • ATMs: Loomis provides several ATMs in the terminal - in Arrivals, in the domestic section, and in International Departures. They dispense Norwegian Krone as well as Europe’s most common currencies.

  • Lost luggage: If you lost something on the plane, contact the relevant airline. The Lost and Found Office is located in the freight terminal, about a 7-minute walk from the passenger terminal. It’s open from Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 6 PM.

  • Water fountains: Several automatic dispensers for hot or cold water are available after Security.

  • Nursery rooms: Available in both the domestic and international sections.

  • Kids’ play area: There are two in the Domestic Terminal - near Gate 26 and between Gates 36 and 37, and one near Gate 46 in the International Terminal.

Lounges at Trondheim Airport

Even since the SAS Café Lounge closed permanently in 2023, Trondheim Airport has not had a premium lounge.

Dining Options at TRD

Like most mid-sized European airports, Trondheim’s dining options are also limited and with a strong focus on grab&go food, such as sandwiches, packaged pastries, snacks, and the like.

Places where you can buy a sandwich at TRD include the Herfra Kiosk, Northland, and the Ritazza coffee bar.

The Herfra Restaurant offers various other food options, where you can sit down to enjoy your meal.

Haven is another restaurant at TRD, focused more on healthier options like fresh bowls, wraps, juices, smoothies, and salads.

O'Leary's is the only real bar at the airport. Apart from various drinks, there you can also have comfort food like burgers, chips, nachos, quesadillas, etc.

All dining options are open while there are flights at the airport.

Transport to and from the airport

Trondheim Airport has an airport railway station called “Værnes station”. The train journey from Trondheim airport to the city center takes about 35 minutes with the northbound R70 Local Train on the route Trondheim <-> Steinkjer. Ticket fares are 46 NOK for singles (1 change permitted) or 138 NOK for a 24-hour ticket.

Trains the most utilized form of transport at Trondheim Airport, connecting to both near and distant places in Norway.

You can also reach Åre from the airport by changing SJ Nord trains at Hell station and at Storlien.

Some long-distance trains also stop at Værnes station. Notably, the F7 route links Trondheim Central Station (Trondheim S) and Bodø.

There is also an airport bus. It offers a comfortable way to reach the city and always departs 35 minutes after an international flight has landed or 45 minutes after charter flights. Tickets cost 160 NOK for adults.

The Airport Bus from Trondheim Airport.

The bus stop for regular public buses is at the airport entrance, about a 4-minute walk from the terminal. Local routes include:

  • Line 311: Express service to Trondheim and Stjørdal, but not very frequent, and doesn’t run on Saturday.

  • Line 70: Services to Stjørdal and Strindheim train station, where you can change to other local buses to the city center. Runs every 15 minutes (every 30 during the weekend) between 5:30 AM (8:30 AM on weekends) and 11 PM.

  • Line 430: Service to Stjørdal and Selbu, 6 times per day (3 on weekends).

Tickets for the buses cost the same as the train - 46 NOK for a single or 138 NOK for a daily ticket.

Given the affordability and frequency of public transport, taxis are relatively expensive - a trip to Trondheim city center will set you back around 1000 NOK. You can easily get a taxi just outside of Arrivals by using the Fast Travel kiosks by the exit. You will be able to see the price in advance.

Uber is available in Norway and usually a tad cheaper than regular taxis, but a trip to the city will still cost around 800 NOK, which is around 20 times the price of the train.

Renting a car may be a viable option to explore more of central Norway, including popular destinations such as Røros, the Atlantic coast, and the beautiful fjords. You can rent a car directly at TRD from one of the six providers there: Avis, Budget, Enterprise, Hertz, Hyre, and SIXT.

Parking at Trondheim Airport

There are a total of 3800 parking spaces near the airport. All facilities utilize an automatic license plate recognition technology, and the system is completely ticketless.

If you are just dropping off or picking someone up at the airport, you may use the special places for pick-up & drop-off, where stays of 7 minutes or less are free. To reach them, go inside the parking garage (P3) and go straight ahead. After the gratis period, the fee is 55 NOK per 20 minutes.

For short parking stays, pick P3. The hourly parking rate there is 165 NOK with a daily cap of 550 NOK. It’s just 1 minute from the terminal.

For longer stays, you can pick between:

  • P3 (covered): Use floors 1 or 2 for the covered parking option. Parking here costs 440 NOK for the first day, 1545 NOK for the first week, 655 NOK for the second week, and 62 NOK per day after that. It’s a 3-minute walk from the terminal.

  • P3 Roof (uncovered): Use floors 3 and 4. It will take you about 7 minutes to reach the terminal on foot from there. The parking rates are slightly cheaper at 355 NOK for a day, 1110 NOK for a week, 580 NOK for the second week, and 46 NOK per day after that.

  • P5 (outdoor): This is the cheapest parking option near TRD. The daily rate starts at 265 NOK, the weekly rate is 925 NOK, with further discounts for even longer stays. It’s about a 15-minute walk from the terminal.

You can pre-book all parking facilities online.

Hotels near Værnes

The most convenient accommodation is Radisson Blu Hotel Trondheim Airport. It is located right beside the terminal, and a covered walkway connects the two. It’s a 4-star hotel popular with business travelers and suitable for layovers, early departures, or late arrivals. With bathtubs in the rooms and a breakfast with a good variety, it’s no wonder this hotel is well-rated.

Another nearby option is Scandic Hell, named after the nearby village, which has become a small tourist attraction in the region. This 4-star hotel is about a 9-minute walk from the terminal and offers a standardized Nordic hotel chain experience. It makes for a practical pre-flight short stay with a great breakfast.

Other options include the Quality Airport Hotel Værnes and Aiden by Best Western Trondheim Airport, both located in Stjørdal, north of TRD, and about a 5-minute drive from the terminal.
